3 Myths About Homebirth — BUSTED!

There’s a lot of misinformation out there about homebirth. Let’s clear a few up ā¬‡ļø

Myth 1: Home birth is unsafe-
Not true. For healthy, low-risk pregnancies with trained midwives, research shows homebirth can be just as safe IF NOT SAFER than hospital birth — with fewer interventions and a calmer environment.

Myth 2: There’s no medical help if something goes wrong-
Actually, skilled midwives are trained to handle emergencies and know exactly when to transfer care. It’s planned, prepared, and professional. Midwives come well equipped for many situations.

Myth 3: It’s messy and chaotic-
Most people are surprised how peaceful it is. Midwives come with supplies, clean up afterward, and leave your home looking like nothing happened (except there’s a baby now 🄹).

Every birth choice is valid — but don’t let fear or outdated myths make decisions for you!

10cm ≠ Time to Push

Reaching "complete" is a huge progress, but it’s not always the finish line. Just because your cervix is out of the way doesn’t mean your baby is in position—or that you’re ready to start pushing.

Here’s why we often Labor Down (wait) instead:
Conserve Energy: Pushing is a marathon. Waiting for the natural "urge to push" saves your strength for the final stretch!
Let Gravity Work: Allowing the baby to descend naturally into the birth canal can lead to a shorter active pushing phase.
Tissue Prep: A slower descent gives your body more time to stretch, which can help reduce the risk of tearing!
The "Lull": It’s common for contractions to space out at 10cm. This is your body’s way of letting you rest before the last stretch of hard work begins.

Bottom line: If you don’t feel that uncontrollable urge yet, it’s okay to rest. Trust the process, not just the numbers!

I’ve noticed the trend of 'placenta consumption' becoming popular in some circles lately, and it’s worth looking at through a biblical lens!

Interestingly, the Bible only mentions this practice in a very somber context. In Deuteronomy 28:56-57, eating the 'afterbirth' is described not as a health benefit, but as a result of a severe curse and extreme desperation.

Beyond that, we have to consider that the placenta is a human organ! For many, this crosses into the territory of cannibalism.

Since its God-given purpose of nourishing the baby is complete once they are born, we can feel perfectly at peace simply tossing it! There are so many other ways we can support our health and hormones postpartum without relying on eating the placenta. šŸ¤

Did you know that only about 5% of babies are actually born on their due dates? šŸ¤ÆšŸ¤°šŸ¼

I know how exhausting and uncomfortable those last few weeks of pregnancy can be, and you may be tempted to try all the things to kick start labor, but those are all "interventions." An induction may also be brought up if you're due around the holidays! Be sure to ask questions and get second opinions to see if it's actually medically necessary... šŸ«¶šŸ»

Typically, it's best to let baby come when it's good and ready.

Take this time to balance rest and movement.

Nourish your body and stay well hydrated.

And do all the things that make you HAPPY to boost that oxytocin. šŸ˜‰šŸ¤

I learned that there is a HUGE gap in the maternal healthcare. Five minute appointments with your OB doesn't cut it. It's not thier fault, it's just how the system is set up! There's rarely any discussion about important things like supporting your hormones, prenatal nutrition, pelvic floor health, etc.! Because of these gaps, so many bigger issues and problems are running rampant!

The hospital system is also not built around support. Its built around management. I wasn't asked what I wanted to do. I was told what they wanted to do. I wasn't given unbiased, factual information about different interventions. My body and baby were rushed through the process and suffered the consequences. No wonder 1 in 3 births are traumatic.

If you choose to have a hospital birth, don't go into it naive like I did! LEARN how to support a healthy pregnancy. LEARN about what your body does during labor and how to move and open during labor! Have a support team you feel SAFE with! And most importantly, pray! Ask for God's wisdom and peace!

A "fad" is something that comes and goes. Homebirth is what stayed.

For the vast majority of human history, birth didn’t happen under fluorescent lights or according to a hospital shift change. It happened by the hearth, in the quiet, surrounded by the familiar.

Choosing a homebirth isn’t about being "on trend." It’s about reclaiming the sovereignty of our bodies. It’s a return to the physiological peace that women have accessed for centuries. We aren’t reinventing the wheel; we’re just remembering how it turns!

Isaiah 41:10: "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."

I love this verse. It can apply to a lot of areas in life - including childbirth. Fear is not of God! He created women for birth and can give them the spirit of peace and joy during this special time.

Seek Him and draw closer to Him. Have faith that triumphs over any fears that may creep in. Rebuke the devil as he has NO place in your birth space.
