IT’S ABOUT TO GET REALLY COLD! 🥶
🐶🐱 PET OWNERS
Shelter & Warmth
• Bring pets indoors whenever possible.
• If pets must stay outside, ensure:
• A dry, insulated shelter
• Protection from wind
• Straw or bedding (not blankets, which can freeze)
• Short-haired, elderly, and young pets are especially vulnerable.
Food & Water
• Pets burn more calories staying warm — they may need extra food.
• Check water bowls frequently; replace frozen water promptly.
• Use heated bowls if available.
Paws & Skin
• Ice, salt, and chemicals can irritate paws.
• Wipe paws after walks and check for cracking or redness.
• Avoid antifreeze exposure — it is highly toxic even in small amounts.
Vehicles
• Cats may seek warmth under hoods — knock on the hood before starting vehicles.
🐄🐑🐐 LIVESTOCK OWNERS
Water Access
• Ensure constant access to unfrozen water.
• Check tanks and automatic waterers multiple times daily.
• Dehydration increases cold stress and reduces feed intake.
Nutrition
• Livestock need increased energy in cold weather.
• Provide adequate forage and consider higher-energy rations during prolonged cold.
• Monitor body condition closely.
Shelter & Wind Protection
• Windbreaks, barns, or natural shelter significantly reduce cold stress.
• Keep bedding dry — wet animals lose heat rapidly.
Calving, Lambing & Kidding
• Be extra vigilant — hypothermia can occur quickly in newborns.
• Have warming supplies ready (towels, heat lamps used safely).
• Call your veterinarian early if concerns arise.
Equipment & Emergency Planning
• Check generators, heaters, and water systems before severe weather.
• Have a plan for after-hours emergencies.
