Advent a Latin word meaning “coming” or “arrival.” The Advent season begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and continues up to Christmas Day.
It all started in Genesis. After Adam and Eve sinned through their disobedience, God made this promise in Genesis 3:15, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” This offspring was Jesus. From the first
moment of our need for rescue, God’s promise was there.
Advent celebrates and remembers his arrival as a baby that was sent to become one of us, to stand in our place, to die for us, and to conquer sin and death once and for all making us a way back to God. This is the already but not yet. He is coming a second time to gather his children for all eternity.
Advent is the traditional celebration of the first advent, or arrival, of Jesus as a humble baby in a manger and anxiously awaiting His second coming in glory when he comes back again. The season is a time for looking back, reflecting, waiting, and rejoicing. Regardless of your situation, whether this is a time of joy or pain, may God meet you where you are to show you he loves you, pursues you, and is always with you.
The Lord be with you as we enter this season of Advent, may the love of God the Father, and the grace of Jesus the Son, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be and abide with us all. Amen!
