Miles was born with otoferlin deafness, a rare form of deafness caused by a mutation in a single gene. But with a new gene therapy approved by the FDA on Thursday, he can hear. Two recent storylines portray starkly different patient experiences: in one, timely access to an AAC device enables clear, effective communication; in the other, a Deaf woman encounters repeated barriers as she tries to communicate with medical staff.
