A member dearly beloved by many of us passed away in December. Here is the obituary of Thomas Benton Hobbs. Please note that although services are being held in Nevada where he died, on August 1, 2026, there will be a memorial for Tom at the Dade County Senior Center in Greenfield, MO.

Born on August 6, 1942 in Torrance, California, Tom grew up in both Southern California and San Jose, CA where he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1960. After an initial attempt at college, Tom joined the US Navy in 1961 where he served in both the Philippines and in Vietnam. Following his time in the US Navy, Tom graduated from USC in 1968 with a degree in Business Administration and went on to become a Certified Public Accountant. Nearly twenty years of hard work as a CPA later, Tom went to graduate school at SJSU to nearly earn an MA in History, focusing on British maritime history in the Pacific Northwest. In 1989, Tom moved to Greenfield, Missouri to pursue a hobby in Hobbs family genealogy. This hobby led Tom to become actively involved in the Greenfield community, ranging from substitute teaching at Greenfield High School to being president of the Dade County Genealogical Society to being a leading patron of the Dade County Library. After 32 years in Missouri, Tom moved to Dayton, NV to live out his life with his eldest daughter.

Tom is survived by his siblings, Peggy Waite, Jim Hobbs, and Tim Hobbs, along with their spouses, children, and grandchildren; his two daughters, Stephanie Fitch and Stacey Petersen, along with their spouses, children, and grandchildren. He is also survived by many step-children and step-grandchildren, including (but not all) Anne Bierman, Chris Julian, and Cheyenne Bierman. Last, Tom is survived by two ex-wives, Carol Sarver and Jean Perry. He joins his late wife, Deanne Julian Hobbs, in death.

Thomas Benton Hobbs passed away December 9, 2025 after a long life filled with family, adventure and hard work. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held Friday February 27, 2026 at 11am at Walton’s Chapel of the Valley in Carson City, NV, followed by an Honor Guard ceremony and burial at 12:15pm at Lone Mountain Cemetery, also in Carson City, NV. The celebration will continue at Stephanie Fitch’s house in Dayton, NV following the Honor Guard ceremony and burial. In lieu of flowers, please kindly donate to the Dade County Library or Dade County Genealogical Society in Tom’s memory.
