Keep Vanderbilt LifeFlight in your thoughts and prayers, the family members and all who have been affected by this tragedy.

Colleagues,

For 41 years, through more than 80,000 flights and 40,000 ground transports, the remarkable members of the Vanderbilt LifeFlight team have saved countless lives. Since inception, the program has highlighted safety as its most important priority. Despite the inherent risk of this work, these dedicated individuals feel called to serve patients in their most vulnerable moments, critically injured or ill.

Yesterday, three crew members serving on LifeFlight 1 were involved in an accident when their aircraft went down in an unpopulated area in Wilson County, TN. There was no patient on board at the time. Allan Williams, RN, Flight Nurse/Paramedic, did not survive. Andrew “Andy” Sikes, Critical Care Flight Paramedic, and the aircraft’s pilot, whose family has asked for privacy at this time, were seriously injured and remain in our care.

As we grieve with Allan’s family, I ask you to please join me in support of them as well as Andy, the pilot and their families.

Sincerely,

Jane Freedman, MD Deputy Chief Executive Officer Chief Health System Officer

Such a tragic event. Our deepest condolences to Suzie’s family, friends, coworkers and REACH Air Medical Services. You all are in our thoughts and prayers.

Our REACH family is devastated to share that Susan “Suzie” Smith has passed away from injuries sustained during the accident involving helicopter N414RX on Highway 50 on Monday night.

We will remember Suzie as a pillar of the EMS and healthcare community who saved countless lives by delivering compassionate care in their darkest hours. Suzie’s 50-year career as a nurse included nearly 21 years with REACH, and we are proud to call her our colleague and friend. We hope she is remembered for the light she brought to every call, every shift, and every patient she blessed with her care.

We grieve Suzie’s loss with her family, friends, colleagues and the entire community that she faithfully served. Her impact will be felt for years to come through the lives she touched, the teams she strengthened, and the compassion she embodied. Thank you for keeping Suzie’s loved ones and our REACH family in your thoughts and support for our team during this difficult time.

This week, our GO CAPS Monett students experienced an unexpected thrill when Cox Air Care landed at the hospital. They had a rare opportunity to see the helicopter up close and watch the incredible flight crew in action as they save lives from the sky.
