checking in w/ a june & july electric eats recap. those two months felt like they were morphed together and flewwww by but i ate some really tasty meals & broke bread w/ some of my favorite ppl! ❤️‍🔥

1. some simple cover art by me… digital drawing inspo been lacking so just some cute words for y’all loll
2. einkorn pancakes topped w/ coconut butter, hempseeds + walnuts. my fav go-to pancake combo rn 🤤
3. a hearty west indian-inspired turmeric based soup w/ some okra, yellow squash & hot peppers as the main veggies. muy calienteee 🥵
4. my friend’s famous and extremelyyy tasty jollof quinoa. OMG i’d every day if i could
5. first ever attempt at vodka pasta— superrr good— w/ pan fried oyster 🍄‍🟫+ a loaded mixed green salad
6. eithopian cuisine exploration pt 1: 📍washington, dc @ cher cher. top 3 best eithopian food i’ve ever eaten
7. tomato & onion, white sauce + spelt crust pizza 😋
8. prepared by another friend: her spin on potato salad using plantains + the crispiest , sweet and sour coated oyster mushrooms
9. kelp caesar salad 📍nyc @ planta transparently speaking: a treat, but really a cheat meal bc ik the ingredients aren’t the most electric but occasionally the chance to sit down and have a “high end” eating experience is what we all need in this lifetime 🤷🏾‍♀️ ( i should talk about this one day)
10. an airplane meal: quinoa w/ a some tomato based stewed veggies + plantains. lots of travel in the last few months but i always attempt to bring something w/ me for the road so my body isn’t having junk food the entire time im on a trip
11. eithopian exploration pt 2: 📍los angeles, ca @ messob eithopian restaurant. the ambiance of this place aka the way culture ran all throughhh the shop was top tier!

DLG, 2022 acrylic on canvas
(by Damahya Mongroo)

my muse: a young .dishescateringllc 👩🏾‍🍳
second slide: a photo of her (and i) @ one of her cooking themed birthday parties 🤯

the first of my unfinished “family & food” series; exploring how families shape their babies’ experiences with food. i started brainstorming the idea for this series shortly after closing our former brick-and-mortar. i treated the rest of that yr like sabbatical… whatever that looks like for a 22 yr old lol. i had a whole bunch of time on my hands and was doing some deep innerchild reflection —not only about myself but the ppl around me.

i was in deep reflection about how the cafe + food was at the center of mine and my dad’s relationship for many yrs leading up to his transition. i was able to acknowledge the good AND the not so good ways that played out too. i did alottt of painting.

somewhere during that time, this photo popped up on my phone. ofc i had to choose devonna as the first muse for the series!

shes my cousin.
she was my co-worker at the garden at one point.
she’s a chef.
she’s the owner of .dishescateringllc
she was a “business girl”— literally.
and now, she’s blossoming into such a beautiful a business woman.

if you’ve heard her speak about the start of her cooking journey, she mentions her cooking time with our grandma as a child. she calls her “her mama odie”— and if you know the reference you know !! she was a child groomed to be a chef through early kitchen rituals. since that age, shes been blessed with countless ppl and opportunities that have allowed her to expand on those gifts.

i am sharing this now but each yr since i painted this portrait, she finds new ways to amaze me (and everyone else watching her). she’s carved out a niche in our city’s food scene and i am so proud of her. she puts intention into her work… anndddd she even prepares vegan offerings for folks like her big cousin 😩😝

i guess i just want to say: great work DLG! KEEP ON GOING! YOU INSPIRE ME! I LUVVV YUUUUUU! 🤎🤎🤎

p.s this is how i feel typing rn: 🥺😭❤️‍🔥🫠🤯🥵🤩🥳😖🥹 lolll

also, enjoy some really fire details shots at the second half of the thread

yessss…… i’m back doing another food recap at the end of the next month 🙃i’ll get it right one day. for now, just enjoy views of some of the best tasting food i ate in the month of may! 😇🥗😇🥗😇🥗😇

1. clearly, i was craving pizza when i sat down to draw this visual + do y’all remember the middle school bubble letter phase??! had me in a chokeee holddd lol
2. shimmy got me into infusing my cooking oil with herbs before i add my veggies.. can’t get enough!
3. quick kamut pasta dish: red bell pepper for the sauce + veggie burger to give it depth 🎨
4. veryy “use what’s in the kitchen” sushi roll; quinoa to replace rice, avocado + pan seared oyster mushroom + yellow pepper for filling, seaweed on the outside bc he we were nottt thinking about the making sure we had a sushi mat before getting the grand idea to make sushi 🙂‍↕️
5. travel meal pt1: one-pot einkorn penne (kind of cajun tasting) + a salad seasoned w herbs and a squeezed lemon
6. travel meal pt2: a “brain food” (spelt) pancake!
7. portobello mushroom fritters, heavily seasoned w dried dill and cayenne pepper (made these a couple times bc they were a hit)🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
8. plantains are alwaysss on the menu bc i love them w all my heart, but these ones tasted extra fye
9. travel meal pt3: tomato + onion based quinoa, fried plantains, lettuce wraps + mushroom fritters

one of these days, i’ll make some content on what it’s like to be on this journey and traveling. rather than eating out on an entire trip, i’ve been trying to tap back into my cooking on the road bag bc when i prepare my own food is when i feel the best! 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

hey everyone!

meet Dallas— the dancer, the athlete and the garden’s most faithfulll veggie burger patron! 🍔🌳🤎

since we started serving burgers pop-up style (april 2024), Dallas hasn’t missed one weekend! last month, she even traded some work for an extra burger hahah

dallas doesn’t eat meat; and she doesn’t even know it but she’s actively dispelling myths like “children are picky eaters” or “children don’t like veggies”

Serena and Dallas: the garden🌳 appreciates your continued support and the smiles you bring each month ❤️‍🔥

you want in what Dallas is tasting??! we’re taking pre-orders for our “famous veggie burger” rn until 06/18
