My parents lived good lives and expected to die good deaths. They exercised daily, ate plenty of fruits and vegetables, and kept, in their well-organized files, boilerplate advance health directives. But when he was 79, my beloved and seemingly vigorous father came up from his basement study, put on...

An extremely relatable and much needed post! ♥️🙌🏼🔵

・・・
I'll go down a depressive path, for weeks, sometimes for over a month.

I'll feel the suffocating pressure of wanting to feel better. To stop putting my family through my 'moods'. To reply to those read messaged from friends. To unfog my mind so I can actually function while at work.

I worry that I'm letting everyone down and that I'm pi***ng everyone off.
And maybe they are pi**ed off 🤷‍♀️ (more than likely, they aren't pi**ed off. We always see things more negatively than they actually are)

But that shouldn't be a problem I need to bare. It's not something I should even give a thought about.

The priority here is me. Is YOU. Going through some tough s**t mentally, for whatever reason or for no reason. It's painful, it's confusing and it can be very frightening.

We don't need to continue adding fuel to our mental fire worrying about the whos and whats, the implications of our illness on others.

This is a time we need to be a little selfish. To say no and be comfortable that we are doing what we feel we need, in that moment.
Some days I don't have the mental energy to joke with friends or even think about meeting up. But I will have the energy to beat myself up for ignoring friends and not meeting up - go figure eh?

I'll have the energy to self loath over how I treat my partner, but not enough energy to sit next to him and tell him how I feel.

Mental illness is a fu**ed up realm.
We can't carry the perceived burden of what we are doing to others. We need to give ourselves a break and the time to heal, for however long that may take.

All the messages urging us to be more vigilant about su***de carry a devastating flip side for family members of people who take their lives: the sense that they did not do enough.

This is Bereaved Parents Month. John Maddox posted this powerful photo with the following quote, "We may look as if we carry on with our lives as before. We may even have times of joy and happiness. Everything may seem “normal”. But THIS,
“Emptiness” is how we all feel...all the time." ❤️ God Bless those who have lost a child. (The artwork is called Melancholy by Albert György & is on display in Geneva, Switzerland) Read more about the piece and artist here --> https://totallybuffalo.com/a-sculpture-that-creates-intense-emotion/
