October is Sensory Processing Awareness Month! Here are some helpful tips from Growing Hands-On Kids to help with teens and sensory processing!
🌟 What to Know 🌟
As teens navigate puberty, independence, and new environments, they might continue facing sensory processing challenges even if you thought they were behind it.
It’s important to shift our mindset—teens aren’t little kids anymore! Instead of doing it for them, support them in choosing what works.
Offer them options for coping strategies and environments, and encourage their input. For example: “Here are three ways you can reset—Which do you want to use?”
Pay attention to emotional signs. Teens may experience more anxiety, frustration or overwhelm. Activities like yoga, deep-breathing, or quiet time outdoors may help.
Help them tune into their environment—lights, sounds, smells—and work with them to adjust things so they feel more comfortable and can focus better.
Finally: their sensory preferences may shift during teen years. What worked before might not anymore—so keep exploring and re-adjusting.
💡 Bottom line: Supporting a teen with sensory needs isn’t about fixing them—it’s about giving them agency, tools, and an environment where they can choose what helps.
