HAPPY AUTISM ACCEPTANCE MONTH!
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a term used to describe a wide range of developmental disabilities that impact a person’s communication development, interpersonal skills, and social interactions. Given that this is a spectrum disorder, no two people with Autism are alike.
1 in 54 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, totaling over 5 million young people and adults.
The purpose of Autism Acceptance Month is to encourage others to celebrate differences. At PFH Behavior Services, it is our goal to continuously advocate for individuals with ASD, promote inclusion, and provide high-quality, evidence-based services to individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
1. Amplify ASD Voices: People with autism know autism best!
2. Advocate! Encourage others to create an environment of acceptance and inclusion, not just awareness.
3. Words Matter: Ditch terms like “high-functioning.” Ask whether or not person-first language is their preferred terminology.
“Person with autism” versus “on the autism spectrum” or “autistic.”
