Sangamon County seeks applicants for Mental Health Board

Following voter approval of the March 2026 referendum, Sangamon County is now accepting applications for individuals interested in serving on the newly established Sangamon County Mental Health Board.

The creation of the board follows more than a year of study and public input. In January 2025, the Sangamon County Board established a Mental Health Commission, as recommended by the Massey Commission, to assess local mental health needs, review how similar boards operate in other communities and provide recommendations.

The Sangamon County Mental Health Board will consist of up to nine members, nominated by County Board Chair Andy Van Meter and approved by the County Board. The board will be responsible for evaluating community needs, establishing funding priorities and overseeing the distribution of resources to local service providers.

The Sangamon County Board is seeking residents with a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds to serve on the board. Individuals with experience in mental health services, health care, education, social services, public safety and finance are encouraged to apply.

Interested individuals may submit an application by providing a resume, a letter of interest, and any supporting documents, such as letters of recommendation, either online, via email to County@SangamonIL.gov, or in person at the Sangamon County Board Office, 200 S. Ninth St., 2nd floor, Springfield, IL 62701. Individuals may also recommend others for consideration through the same process.

Members of the previously established Sangamon County Mental Health Commission will assist in the review process by evaluating applications and helping to identify qualified candidates for consideration by the County Board.

The deadline to apply is April 20 at 5 p.m.

Vote Yes for Mental Health!

According to Sangamon County community survey:
60% of respondents keep mental health concerns to themselves;
41% reported an unmet mental health need in the past three years;
47% do not know about accessibility.

Please vote yes on March 17 to support the establishment of a 708 Mental Health Board in Sangamon County that will bring much needed resources dedicated to mental and behavioral health in our community!

Our Origin
You may have noticed a character in the heart of the sun in our logo - it is a Chinese character written in a traditional font, and the last name of our owner's late father-in-law, Mr. Liu. The character is made of two parts, the left means "literature and culture", and the right "martial arts". Together it means a person who has merits and gifts in both worlds. We had been talking about creating our own practice and growing into a space where diverse therapists serve the various needs of individuals in Illinois, but were dragging our feet a little - entrepreneurship seemed daunting. Mr. Liu, a small business owner himself, was very excited to hear about the idea and was always very encouraging and supportive of us starting a counseling practice. However, he didn't live to see the day when we registered our business and opened our doors. He was a man who lived through the cultural revolution depraved of education opportunities but made the best out of the resources he had, and his dream was always to help his children obtain knowledge and education to his best ability. Through his entrepreneurial efforts he sent all three children to college - first generation in the family. We added his last name and calligraphy to our logo in honor of his support and encouragement.
