Shining a light on prevention in action! Our March HCAT meeting was one for the books.

We’re so grateful to have had three incredible women come and share the work they do, in the world of substance use prevention.

HCAT would like to extend a special thank you to these local coalition leaders, Liz Monopoli (West Springfield CARES), Ananda Lennox (Longmeadow CLOSE), and Jackie Hafner (Hampden-Wilbraham Partners for Youth) for sharing their knowledge, data, and passion with the community. Your leadership is making a real, measurable difference.

Because of prevention efforts like yours, we are seeing:
✔️ Decreases in youth substance use
✔️ Stronger, healthier community norms
✔️ More young people connected to positive activities, leadership opportunities, and supportive spaces

This work isn’t always loud or immediate, but it is powerful. It’s in the relationships built, the skills developed, and the choices young people make every day.

Prevention works. Youth voices matter. Community collaboration is everything.

Thank you for leading the way and reminding us what’s possible when we invest in our young people.

Grief often leaves us holding words we never got to say and emotions that feel too big to name. Writing can offer a meaningful way to process those feelings, but getting started isn't always easy.

Join us for a special workshop, Where the Words Go: Writing Through Grief After the Death of a Loved One, featuring three guest speakers: Tom Flanagan (Blue Skies Rhode Island), Luna Jaffe (Look Mom, I Can Fly), and Tanya Lord (Peer Support Community Partners).

Learn how writing shaped their own grief journeys, from poetry to published books, and how anyone can use writing as a source of comfort and connection.

Last week, HCAT Co-Coordinator Bradley Bodenstein had the opportunity to speak with students from Putnam Vocational Tech Academy in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western MA.

The Hampden District Attorney’s Office Community Safety and Outreach (CSO) Unit serves as the prevention and education arm of the DA’s Office. Their powerful “Just Once” presentation walks students through the journey of addiction, the road to recovery, and practical ways to resist peer pressure and stay on a healthy path.

Bradley shared his personal story, offering real-life perspective, hope, and encouragement for students to continue choosing a positive path forward.

If you are part of a youth-serving organization or school, and would like the DA’s CSO Unit to present, please contact Gina Anselmo at Gina.Anselmo@mass.gov. All CSO programming is offered free of charge.

Let’s continue working together to prevent future substance use and support the next generation in making empowered choices.
