For now, I'm pretty well done with forced content-creation + planned social media engagement. Been done with it for a minute and the algorithm doesn't like it, so I'm not sure you'll actually see this. Posting is raw and real; not adhering to a forced social media schedule.
Here's what needs to be said...
Churches, there's a big season ahead and many families in your community are going to miss out. Not because they weren't invited.
Not because they didn't know about all of the Christmas events going on.
Not because anyone did anything wrong.
But because there's not a place where people and families impacted by disabilities belong (PSA welcoming is not a synonym for belonging)
It can feel cringey to think about it and the knee jerk, of course, is "What do you mean? Yes, they do belong. Everybody belongs and the community/city/town/etc. knows that! Our church welcomes everyone who wants to be here!".
But hear me out: In what way has that been expressed? In what way is the church letting families know that their loved one who has a disability of any varying degree not only is welcome, but has a place to learn and serve and grow in the church? A place where they can be discipled? A place where their value as a human merges with their mission from the Lord.
There's a big need for missions overseas but there's a very clear and evident need for churches to be open hearted, open minded, and open voiced about discipling ALL who desire to learn about Jesus, not just those who are "typically developing".
The gospel is for everyone.
Be challenged this Christmas season to ask the hard and uncomfortable questions about
1. What do I believe about disabilities & the gospel, &
2. What does the bible say and model about disabilities & the gospel.
When in doubt, ask around. Survey your local community. Your friends. Your circle.
You may be shocked at the responses. I've worked with churches of varying sizes to help start these conversations and I have to tell you, it's very eye opening for all involved.
Anyways, before I go, know this: Intent to Include is here to
✨support families navigating the SPED & IEP process with clarity & confidence, AND
✨serve as a resource for churches & ministries who are ready to do the work towards making their church a place where people and families with disabilities belong, not just "get" to attend.
If you want to visit in more detail or are looking for support or guidance in either of those areas, drop me a DM or visit www.intenttoinclude.com
