Leo C. Chase & Son Funeral Home

The Leo C. Chase & Son Funeral Home played a critical and courageous role during the 1963–1964 Civil Rights Movement in St. Augustine.

Founded by Leo C. Chase Sr. in West Augustine, the funeral home became far more than a business, it was a lifeline for the Black community during one of the city’s most turbulent periods.

During the height of the 1964 protests, Chase Funeral Home ambulances transported injured foot soldiers and activists. At the time, many white-owned ambulance services refused to treat or transport Black protesters, making this service essential and lifesaving.

Located at 262 West King Street, the funeral home served as a trusted, safe institution supporting efforts led by Dr. Robert Hayling, the NAACP Youth Council, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Like many Black funeral homes across the South, it functioned as a safe space for organizing, planning, and protection during the fight for equality, quietly but powerfully sustaining the movement.

Today, Leo C. Chase & Son Funeral Home now Leo C. Chase & Associates remains a legacy Black-owned business, with the third generation continuing its mission of service, dignity, and community care in St. Augustine and surrounding Counties and States.
