Have you ever heard your friends, family or even your eye doctor talk about Glaucoma?

Here are a few slide and facts to learn more about one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide:

๐Ÿ‘ Over 3 million Americans have glaucoma but only half of those know they have it.
๐Ÿ‘ In the U.S., more than 120,000 are blind from glaucoma, accounting for 9% to 12% of all cases of blindness.
๐Ÿ‘ Blindness from glaucoma is 6 to 8 times more common in African Americans than Caucasians.
๐Ÿ‘ High-risk groups include: people over 60, family members of those already diagnosed, diabetics, and people who are severely nearsighted.

Happy National Sunglasses Day!

This time of year, youโ€™ll always here me ask a patient what they use for sun protection for their eyes.

Here are the top 4 eye conditions that can result or worsen with too much UV exposure:

Patients always ask how to prevent their cataracts from getting worse.

My #1 recommendations are:

1๏ธโƒฃ Get yearly eye exams ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€โš•๏ธ

2๏ธโƒฃ Quit smoking. Cigarette/Tobacco smoke has several toxins that make cataracts thicken more quickly.๐Ÿšญ

3๏ธโƒฃ Always wear UV protection over your eyes: Polarized sunglasses and Transition lenses are great options! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

4๏ธโƒฃ A diet with lots of fruits and veggies will provide your body with the anti-oxidants needed to slow disease progression. Think green leafy veggies ๐Ÿฅฌ and vitamin C๐ŸŠ

Your eye doctor has finally said those 3 little words: โ€œYOU HAVE CATARACTS.โ€

Did you know there are 4 types of cataracts, all which will cause a gradual decline in vision until surgery is needed.

1. Nuclear Sclerosis: the most common of cataracts. It is the yellowing/thickening of the crystalline lens as a whole.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
2. Cortical Cataracts: thick spokes on the periphery of the lens as a result of aging.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
3. Posterior Subcapsular Cataracts (PSC): opaque area on the back of the lens, usually in the center of your vision. Common side effect of prolonged steroid use.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
4. Traumatic Cataracts: damage to the lens due to injury, accidents involving the head/eye/face, or occur after a patient has other eye surgeries.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
5. Congenital Cataracts: lens opacities that a person is born with. These cataracts may or may it impair vision at a young age, resulting in surgery at a young age.

Be sure to discuss your diagnosis with your optometrist and know what to expect!

Who run the ๐ŸŒŽ.....GIRLS!

If you haven't heard, April is Women's Eye Health Month! Did you know that compared to men, women are more at risk for a number of eye diseases/conditions such as: Cataracts, Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, Dry Eye, Thyroid Eye Disease, etc.

Why is this you may ask?

1. Women have an average life expectancy that is longer than men.
2. Several eye conditions are linked to hormone changes associated with birth control, pregnancy: current and post-partum, & menopause.
3. Harmful ingredients in cosmetics, beauty care products, false lashes/lash extensions, and permeant makeup can also lead to harmful eye conditions.

The best way to make sure your eyes are healthy and vision is clear is to see your optometrist YEARLY! We can identify risk factors and eye disease when they first occur, not when it's too late to treat or fix.

Happy Earth Day! ๐ŸŒโœจ

Did you know there is a negative environmental effect due to improper contact lens disposal? ๐Ÿ—‘๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿป

19% of contact lens wearers improperly discard their lenses in the toilet or sink. This equates to about 2.5 billion contact lenses entering the U.S. wastewater treatment plants each year!๐Ÿ‘€

That is why we are proud to participate in the Terra Cycle/Bausch and Lomb ONE by ONE contact lens recycle program. This allows our patients to recycle both their contacts & the blister packs!๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒโœจ

Call our offices for more information on how you can start recycling your contacts today โ™ป๏ธ
