A secure bond with your child is the key to healthy attachment and connection!

How do you know if you have a secure bond with your child?⁣

I work with moms day in and day out who are looking for some kind of criteria and measure for how they are doing in their bond with baby or child. ⁣

This can be really hard when baby is little and doesn’t have much language or reciprocal interaction is lacking because they are so young. ⁣

Let me free you of some expectations you may be holding onto that you may think foster secure attachment but according to the research are not the special sauce:⁣
~ being present 24/7 ⁣
~ always getting it right⁣
~ being focused on every single need⁣
~ elevating child’s struggle/discomfort/big feelings all of the time ⁣
~ never losing it or perfectly managing your emotions⁣

We need to shift our focus from the current way we measure our attachment and “success” in parenting and move towards measuring our bond by our attunement, ability to model repair, ability to regulate our own emotions in the face of a meltdown and so on. ⁣

This motherhood gig is not about getting it right or doing it perfectly, it’s about fostering safety, security, and modelling repair as a part of healthy relationships. ⁣

Keep showing up imperfectly perfect mama ❤️⁣

Beautiful and wonderfully explained!

✨The concept of a window of tolerance (created by Dr. Dan Siegel) refers to how much we can handle - emotionally. When pushed outside this zone we can either blow up - like a tornado or shut down, and freeze like going into a cave.

✨When we’re feeling safe, calm and able to engage well in daily life we are likely in our optimal zone and inside this window of tolerance.

✨I’m sure it’s no surprise to you that when we’re feeling overwhelmed (especially over a long period of time) our window of tolerance gets smaller and smaller.

✨With all that’s going on in the world right now you might notice your window of tolerance isn’t as large as it used to be. It may feel like little fears get triggered much easier causing you to strike out, or you might want to check out—either way having an awareness of this can be helpful. Finding a way to give yourself compassion and space is important.

✨Some ways to get back inside of your window of tolerance can be:
- Deep breathing
- meditation
- singing
- listening to music
- laughing
- crying
- connecting with a loved one
- going for a walk
- sleep and rest

Sometimes a check list is the boost we need. Love this check list I saw online! It checks in with your physical, mental, social, and psyche. We are whole human beings and we have to take care of and check in with ALL parts of ourselves. Taking care of your whole self is true definition of “treat yo self” extended Sunday... Happy Labor Day!
