Any exercise that specifically trains qualities important to performance of a task can be considered functional

For grapplers, pulling & grip strength, strong & healthy shoulders, and having a good strength/bodyweight ratio are essential

Pull-ups work all of those qualities, require virtually zero equipment, next to zero technical skill, and are easy to modify for different individuals/situations
