The SI joint can be a significant cause of lower back pain. Clinical publications have identified the SI joint as a pain generator in 15-30% of chronic lower back pain patients.1-4 In addition, the SI joint is a pain generator in up to 43% of patients with continued or new onset lower back pain after a lumbar fusion. Once the SI joint is confirmed as the cause of your symptoms, treatment can begin. Some patients respond well to physical therapy, use of oral medications, or injection therapy. These treatments are often performed repetitively, and frequently symptom improvement using these therapies is temporary. Dr. Hinz is a sports medicine board certified orthopedic surgeon. He specializes in soft tissue reconstruction, arthroscopy and arthroplasty of the shoulder, hip and knee. Dr. Hinz earned his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital where he was Chief Resident. Following residency, Dr. Hinz completed a Sports Medicine fellowship at The University of Massachusetts Medical School where he received specialty training in arthroscopy, ligamentous reconstruction and cartilage restoration of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle, as well as, arthroplasty of the shoulder and knee. While attending his fellowship he assisted in team physician coverage of the Pawtucket Red Sox, Massachusetts Pirates, Worcester State University, Becker College and multiple High Schools in Central Massachusetts. Without an X-ray, it's nearly impossible to tell when—or if—the patient has a fracture. There are layers of skin, muscle, and fat between the rescuer's eyes and the possible broken bone. Some folks believe they can tell if a bone is broken by whether or not the patient can use it, such as a young athlete who thinks his leg isn't broken because he can walk on it. That's a myth. Many times, the only thing keeping a patient from walking on a broken leg or using a broken arm is the pain.

You can tell if a bone is fractured or bruised with medical imaging or symptoms like deformity that suggests fracture or discoloration suggesting a bruise.
