Even when things are going well with the IEP team, it can still feel overwhelming to sit across from a group of professionals who work with your child. Never feel guilty about asking a friend, relative, neighbor, or advocate to come sit with you at the meeting.

Take a moment and read this. Then reread it. Then sit with it for a moment. The responsibility for the achievement gap we see every day does not lie at the feet of our children. At some point along our way we normalized failing to teach literacy to children in our public schools. We simply stopped expecting 40+% of our children to read.

Have you ever wondered what "deescalation" or "restraint" actually looks like in a school setting? Join us for this FREE class by CPI, where we will overview the training they provide to school districts.

We'll learn about the brain science behind escalated behaviors, we'll practice de-escalation tecniques, and we'll even practice restraint holds on each other to gain a true understanding of the material.

This information is critical in understanding what's happening at school so we can become more informed in advocating for better outcomes.

The class is free, but if you have to travel, those expenses will be on the individual.

Here's the full report. It's frightening to think but it's likely, as the report states, this is an under reported issue given SSD's unwillingness to fully cooperate. Is your child being restrained or secluded?

Changing the Law: Missouri's Journey to Reform Seclusion and Restraint in Schools
Presenter: Lara Wakefield & Julia Chaney-Faughn, Esq.

Brief Session Description:
This presentation traces Missouri's legislative journey to reform its seclusion and restraint laws in schools, led by volunteers from the Missouri Disability Empowerment Foundation. Presenters review the catalyst for change, outline the step-by-step process of drafting and passing the legislation, and highlight the critical role of including a public-facing data reporting requirement. Using three years of statewide data (2022 - 2025), the session presents on the importance of analyzing trends, reporting accuracy, and outcomes. Lessons learned, next steps, and an open Q&A with the audience are also included.
