This momma’s and baby’s story is so wonderful that I had to share! With permission, of course. This woman had a breast reduction in the spring of 2024. She entered my care for homebirth, and we held out hope that she would make some milk based on the significant breast growth she experienced in pregnancy. I was astonished when she was able to freeze 50 syringes of colostrum! Her breasts sure were working…
She delivered her baby girl, her first, much quicker than we expected. Honestly, she knocked it out of the park 🤩. It was so fun! This woman is the A+ student type and held her baby almost continuously, attempting to latch her over and over again. Baby didn’t nurse great immediately after birth, but her mother’s diligence paid off, and she sent me this text 2 days after she was born, “It’s good! I can’t wait for you to see how good she’s latching.” I followed her weight very closely on my Tanita lactation scale that measures to 2/10ths of an ounce accuracy. The baby was down 7% at 3 days old, but had gained 5.3 ounces between days 3 and 7! At the one week visit, I heard very frequent swallows. Clearly, she was transferring milk very well, and the milk was there for her! She has continued to gain very well over the past 6 weeks and it has been such a pleasure watching this amazingly dedicated new mom focus so intensely on this journey ❤️❤️❤️
I saw them yesterday for the last official visit, and baby girl is now delicately chubby. This whole experience has filled us both with such joy. I have never known a woman with a breast reduction to be able to establish a full milk supply, and I’m so glad that this precious couple are the exception.
