We are in the midst of seasonal change, and yet it still feels very much like summer. Ayurveda can bring support during this time. The environment has shifted to a drier environment, wind has increased, and we will begin to experience more temperature irregularity and coolness. Our body responds with sinus congestion, sneezing, dry skin, some spaciness to the mind, feeling less grounded, and irregularity in appetite and bowel habits.
Here are some things to bring balance during this time.
1. Favor Warm, Well-Cooked, Unctuous, and Grounding Foods
* Shift from salads and cold drinks to soups, stews, and porridges.
* Cook with ghee, olive oil, or sesame oil to nourish dryness.
* Include sweet, sour, and salty tastes (they calm Vata). Examples: roasted root veggies, kitchari, baked apples, warm milk with spices.
2. Maintain a Steady Daily Rhythm
* Vata season brings instability — routine provides grounding.
* Eat, sleep, and wake at consistent times.
* Create calming morning and evening rituals (oil massage, gentle stretching, journaling).
3. Practice Daily Self-Oil Massage (Abhyanga)
* Use warm sesame or almond oil before showering to protect the skin and nervous system from dryness and overstimulation.
* Especially beneficial before bed or after stressful days.
4. Nourish the Nasal Passages with Nasya Oil
* The dry autumn air can irritate the sinuses.
* Apply a few drops of warm herbal Nasya oil (or sesame oil) into each nostril daily.
* It keeps the sinuses clear, supports prana flow, and protects against seasonal dryness.
5. Stay Warm & Protect from Wind
* Dress in layers, cover the neck, head, and ears when it’s windy.
* Avoid cold exposure and overexertion.
* Choose slow, warming exercises like yoga, walking, or gentle strength work.
6. Support Digestion & Immunity
* Sip warm water or ginger tea throughout the day.
* Eat cooked foods and avoid snacking too often.
* Use seasonal spices like ginger, cinnamon, cumin, and cardamom to kindle agni (digestive fire).
