“After having my root canal removed and the deteriorating bone cleaned out I am feeling better in my neck, shoulder, and also having less bloating in the stomach. I am hoping as the infection leaves my body I will continue to feel better.”

“Safety concerns about cookware mostly revolve around a class of chemicals known as PFAS, also called “forever chemicals” because they can linger in the environment and our bodies for years. Some PFAS have been linked to cancers, liver disease and developmental delays in children.”

We recommend using uncoated cookware like cast iron, stainless steel, carbon steel or fully ceramic pots and pans, and glassware for baking. Uncoated pans may be harder to clean, require oil or butter to prevent sticking and can often cost more than nonstick alternatives, but with the right care, they last longer and are better for you.

Many brands claim to have safer chemical coatings on their pots and pans. But can you trust what’s on the label?

“If you have “silver” fillings and are concerned about mercury exposure, the first thing to do is to consult with a well-trained biological dentist. They can conduct the appropriate exams and testing to evaluate the impact amalgam may be having on your whole body health. They can talk with you about the pros and cons of amalgam removal specific to your unique situation.

“Should you ultimately decide to have your amalgams replaced with biocompatible restorations, safe removal of those old fillings is crucial. The evidence-based SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique) protocol, developed by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), provides specific guidelines to minimize mercury exposure during the removal process.”

We’ve known for years that mercury from “silver” amalgam fillings shows up in urine. We also know there’s a correlation between the number of fillings a person has and urinary mercury levels. Earlier analyses found that about 10% of American adults get a daily dose of mercury v***r that’s ...

"Instead of asking what would happen if we just subtracted fluoride, perhaps we’d do better to ask which combination of nontoxic strategies might best prevent decay."

When folks share their concern about ending fluoridation, it’s often accompanied by the direst of predictions about what it would mean. A recent paper in JAMA Health Forum, for instance, states that we’d see 25 million more kids with cavities, almost $10 billion in extra treatment costs over fiv...

From the article: “Scientists have uncovered a direct link between oral bacteria and Parkinson’s disease. They found that Streptococcus mutans, best known for causing cavities, can settle in the gut and release metabolites that reach the brain.”

The findings suggest that targeting the oral–gut microbiome could lead to novel strategies for preventing or treating the disease.

"Problems that may arise in titanium-based dental implants include the generation of titanium and titanium alloy particles and ions deposited into surrounding tissues due to the corrosion and wear of implants, resulting in bone loss due to inflammatory reactions, which may lead to osseointegration failure of the dental implant.

"These titanium ions and particles are systemically deposited and can lead to toxic reactions in other tissues such as yellow nail syndrome. Additionally, implant failure and allergic reactions can occur due to hypersensitivity reactions."

A while back, an Arizona TV station ran a troubling investigative report on dental implants. Reports of problems with the devices were up. Way up. Analyzing yearly data, there were less than 13,000 reports of problems in 2018. In 2021, reports skyrocketed to 477,823. More than 98% of the reports are...

Biocompatibility – literally, compatibility with life (bio) – is something we most often talk about in relation to dental materials. When restoring teeth, for instance, a biological practice such as ours opts for materials like ceramic and BPA-free composite instead of mercury amalgam, stainless steel, and other metals.

Our Office & the Tooth/Body Connection

My story begins back in 1994 when I was first introduced to the term “biological dentistry.” Sometimes I think it was either a divine intervention for me or simply by chance that I found a book called Mercury Free by James Hardy at the bookstore. It told the story of how mercury was officially introduced to the dental profession back in 1830’s. Dr. Hardy made some bold statements about the ill effects that mercury exposure could have on our patient’s health and wellness.

As I look back over the last twenty years, my concept of dental health has evolved as I’ve incorporated a holistic perspective in treating my patients. “Keep it safe – Keep it simple” is our mantra in the office now.

As dentistry continues to service our patients into the 21st century, we must remember that the mechanical benefits of restoring the mouth go hand in hand with the biological effects that these procedures may cause to the rest of the body. In other words, the tooth/body connection must be considered when treating our patients. We must use dental materials that lend themselves to wellness. We must evaluate treatments such as root canals and implants and recognize how these procedures may compromise our biological health and well being.
