Your highest self is not a stranger. They are already in you, waiting for you to stop doubting and start moving.

Picture them clearly. How they walk into rooms. How they speak to themselves at 7am. What they say yes to. What they walk away from without apology.

Now close the gap. One choice at a time. One boundary. One bold ask. One deep breath before the spiral starts.

You do not have to become someone new. You just have to show up as who you already are underneath all the noise.

One year later, and our community continues to rise together.

It has been a full year since the 2025 tornado changed so many lives across St. Louis, and the work of rebuilding is far from over. Families are still recovering. Homes are still being restored. Neighbors are still leaning on neighbors. That is the St. Louis we know and love.

The Urban League of Metropolitan Saint Louis is hosting a Weekend of Service May 15 through 17 to support families still recovering, and there are so many ways to get involved. Whether you can donate, volunteer, or need help yourself, there is a place for you this weekend.

πŸ—“οΈ Friday, May 15: Job Fair (10a-3p) and Disaster Cleanup (7a-3p)
πŸ—“οΈ Saturday, May 16: Community Distribution Drive-Thru (12-3p)

It's okay to put yourself first.

Not in a selfish way. In a survival way. In a "you can't keep pouring from an empty cup" way. In a "the people who love you want you here, whole and well" way.

Somewhere along the line, a lot of us learned that taking care of ourselves was something we had to earn. That rest was a reward. That saying no meant letting someone down. That choosing our own peace was asking too much.

It isn't.

Putting yourself first can look like going to bed instead of answering one more email. Eating lunch without multitasking. Saying no to a favor because your week is already full. Booking the appointment you've been putting off. Asking for help. Stepping back from the group chat for an afternoon. Calling 988 when the weight gets too heavy to carry alone.

You are allowed to be a priority in your own life. You are allowed to tend to yourself with the same care you give everyone else. And if today that feels hard, this is your reminder: your wellbeing is not optional.

BHR is here whenever you need us. πŸ’œ

Did you know? Loneliness affects your body the same way smoking 15 ci******es a day does.

The U.S. Surgeon General called loneliness a public health crisis, and the research backs it up. Chronic loneliness is linked to a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, dementia, and depression. Your body reads isolation as a threat, and over time, that stress wears you down.

Here's the part that gets overlooked: loneliness isn't about how many people are in your life. It's about how seen you feel by them.

You can feel lonely in a full house. You can feel lonely in a group chat that lights up every day. You can feel lonely at a dinner table where nobody asks how you're really doing.

The fix isn't always more people. Sometimes it's one honest conversation. One friend you stop performing for. One moment of being known.

Reach out to someone today. Not the quick "how are you," but the kind that makes space for a real answer. Your call or text might be the thing that changes their whole week.

And if you're the one carrying the weight right now, BHR is here. You don't have to do it alone.

A lot of us are waiting for the storm to pass before we allow ourselves to feel okay. Waiting for the schedule to clear. Waiting for the stress to calm down. Waiting for everyone else to settle before we do.

But peace isn't something you find on the other side of your life. It's something you practice inside of it.

You can be in the middle of a hard season and still choose a soft moment. You can have a full calendar and still protect one quiet breath. You can be surrounded by noise and still come home to yourself.

Peace isn't a place. It's a practice. And it's available to you right now.

πŸ’œ Tag someone who needs this reminder today.

Stress doesn't just live in your head. It lives in your shoulders. Your jaw. The small of your back. The breath you forgot you were holding.

When life gets loud, try this 30-second body-based reset. It's called Soften, Settle, Sigh.

1️⃣ Soften
Scan your body from the top down. Find the three places where you're holding the most tension (usually the jaw, shoulders, and hands). Let them go, one at a time.

2️⃣ Settle
Press your feet flat into the floor. Feel the ground underneath you. This tells your nervous system: "I am here. I am safe. I am supported."

3️⃣ Sigh
Take one deep breath in through your nose, then let it out through your mouth with an audible sigh. Not a polite exhale. A real one. Your body knows what to do with that sound.

Stress doesn't always need a long solution. Sometimes it just needs 30 seconds of you coming back to yourself.

πŸ’œ Save this for later. Share it with someone who needs it.

"Be proud of yourself for surviving all of the silent struggles you don't speak about."

Nobody claps for the nights you cried yourself to sleep and still showed up the next morning. Nobody sees the panic you pushed through to send that email, make that call, or walk into that room. Nobody knows the weight you carried while smiling through a meeting, a family dinner, or a text that said "I'm good."

But you know. And that matters.

Surviving in silence is still surviving. The strength it takes to keep going when nobody knows what you're going through is real, and it deserves to be honored, even if the only person doing the honoring today is you.

You don't always have to explain your battles to be proud of winning them. And when you're ready to stop carrying it alone, we're here.

BHR is available 24/7. Call or text 988 anytime.
