Mental Health First Aid Missouri Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the initial help given to someone developing a mental health challenge or experiencing a mental health crisis.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Missouri conducts courses designed to teach the general public how to recognize symptoms of mental health problems, how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person towards appropriate treatments and other supportive help. There are curriculums for adults and youth along with specializations in public safety, veterans, and faith-based groups. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Missouri is housed within the Missouri Institute of Mental Health and is one of three national partners in the US that teach and distribute the curriculum. This week, Mental Health First Aid Instructors and Coordinators gathered in Columbia, Missouri, for an annual Summit. The energy in the room was electric! They shared stories, tips, and presentations on how to expand the reach of Mental Health First Aid across the state.

From anxiety and depression to substance use and suicidal thoughts, today’s youth face challenges that can’t be ignored. Every student deserves someone who will listen, understand, and connect them to the right support.

Our Mental Health Awareness Trainings — including Youth Mental Health First Aid and Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) — help pre-service school staff feel more confident and prepared to support students in distress.

We’re offering these trainings at no cost to teacher training programs across Missouri, now through September 2026.
