Meet one of our Clinical Interns, Byron Edmond!

"My name is Byron Edmond, and I’m a Navy Veteran who served during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Currently, I’m pursuing a Master of Social Work (MSW) clinical concentration at the University of Saint Louis. Working with veterans holds great significance for me, as I firsthand understand the challenges of transitioning from military life to civilian life. During my own transition, I received invaluable support from various individuals and organizations. I aspire to reciprocate this support by assisting my fellow veterans in a similar manner."

Favorite Self Care Activities: Going to the gym, taking vacation days, and napping as needed.

Meet our Volunteer Group Facilitator, Rachel Martell!

"I’m a Marine corps veteran, Air Force spouse, and mom of three who’s lived military life from every angle—serving away from my kids, parenting while my spouse was deployed, and moving nine times in sixteen years. I know how much courage, heart, and community it takes to keep going through all the changes. That’s why I’m passionate about creating spaces where military families and spouses feel truly welcomed, understood, and cared for. As a licensed teacher and current MSW student, I’m dedicated to advocating for military spouses and helping families fill their toolboxes with ways to connect, cope, and thrive—wherever the military takes them."

Favorite self-care activities: Gym, journaling, and singing really loud in the car.

Meet one of our Clinical Interns, Shonda Howard!

“I am an Army National Guard combat veteran who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom (2009–2010). I’m currently pursuing my Master of Social Work through the Advanced Standing program at The Brown School at Washington University. I believe no one should have to feel like they're doing life alone. That’s why this program is so important to me, because connection, support, and shared understanding can truly change lives.”

Favorite Self Care Activities: Listening to music, doing a daily devotional, and taking time to relax (while also watching a few episodes of Martin).

So what is “barrier free”? We want to make therapy as accessible as possible for Veterans, so we partnered with local organizations that share that same goal. Grant funding has allowed for services at Valor Harbor to be completely cost free.

Branch of service and discharge status are not a factor for services. National Guard Veteran who doesn’t qualify for VA services? Other than Honorable Discharge? Not a problem. We just need your DD-214 or another form of service verification to start services.

We also do not want location to be a barrier, so we offer Zoom sessions for Veterans in Missouri. [Our clinicians are still waiting for the Illinois credentials to be approved]

Family members are also eligible for services! Whether you are a spouse, child, or friend - if you support a Veteran you qualify for services. Even if the Veteran is not receiving services from us, you can access care.

Valor Harbor is a barrier free talk therapy program for Veterans and their self-identified family members. This is a grant funded program through Missouri Veterans Endeavor (MOVE-STL), a non-profit in St. Louis that provides long term supportive housing to Veterans experiencing homelessness.

This therapy program was created to fill the gap in services for Veterans and their family members who do not qualify for VA services [but is open to any Veteran!]. Valor Harbor’s office is located in Crestwood, MO and has Zoom capabilities for residents of Missouri (IL credentialing is pending). Therapists at Valor Harbor have experience working with Veterans through employment, are a spouse of a Veteran, or are Veterans themselves!

If you are interested in services, contact Ashley Smith, LCSW at asmith@move-stl.org or call 314-399-4903.

* Valor Harbor is not associated with the VA or DoD.
