Donor support helps move cancer research forward at Barnes-Jewish Hospital every day. This World Cancer Day, we're proud to highlight the Siteman Investment Program (SIP), which provides early-stage, peer-reviewed funding to help promising cancer research ideas grow into breakthroughs.

Continued support of the Cancer Frontier Fund is essential to give researchers access to the tools, resources, and therapies that advance cancer care. By investing in early-stage research, donors help accelerate discoveries, support bold ideas, and ensure that each generation has access to the most innovative and leading-edge therapies.

Created in 2009, the Cancer Frontier Fund at The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital fuels high-risk, high-reward cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center, providing critical seed funding that research-scientists need to test bold ideas, gather early data, and accelerate breakthroughs from the lab to patients.

Every year, funds raised by Pedal the Cause champions are directed through the Foundation to support the Cancer Frontier Fund. Last week, Pedal the Cause Board President David Yonce, Pedal the Cause Executive Director David Drier, Siteman Cancer Center Director Tim Eberlein, and Foundation Vice President and Executive Director David Bruns gathered to celebrate the impact of the generous funds raised in 2025 to support cancer research.
To the thousands of riders, fundraisers, and volunteers who made the 2025 Pedal the Cause a record-breaking success, thank you! 💙

🌟 Did you know? 🌟

The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital was born in 1996 alongside the merger of Barnes Hospital and Jewish Hospital. Long before then, both hospitals were shaped by generous communities. Dedicated auxiliaries served as the fundraising and volunteer arms of the hospitals to raise funds that supported special projects and patient care support.

Today, the Foundation carries forward that same focus of the original auxiliaries. While medicine and technology have evolved, philanthropy remains at the heart of Barnes-Jewish Hospital and its mission to provide exceptional care to every patient. 💙

During Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, learn how philanthropic investment brings innovative treatments to patients while improving how care fits into their lives.

With early funding from the Foundation, and two subsequent NIH grants, Stephanie Markovina, MD, PhD, developed drugs to decrease cancer growth. While developing the drug therapy, Dr. Markovina worked to rearrange and reuse parts of standard therapies and treatments to reduce office visits for patients in clinical trials and, thus, create less interruption of their lives.

While it may take longer for a specific discovery to become mainstream, Dr. Markovina says patients around the world can receive care more quickly and efficiently through small incremental changes—such as reusing imaging and blood tests patients are already receiving as standard care.

An evening filled with gratitude, admiration, and deep appreciation. Colleagues, friends, and loved ones gathered at our Clinical and Faculty Partner Holiday Reception to honor Michael Avidan, MBBCh, with the 2025 President's Achievement Award.

Dr. Avidan's leadership, compassion, and unwavering joy have shaped countless lives across Barnes-Jewish Hospital and WashU Medicine. His reflections reminded us what it means to live with purpose, uplift others, and lead with heart. 💙

Our Story

As part of the 1996 merger of Barnes Hospital and Jewish Hospital, The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital was born, carrying forward a rich history of philanthropy from both institutions.

Over time, much has changed at the Foundation. In 2011, its original name—the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation—became The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The board of directors also has evolved. Once required to have 20 board members each from the former Barnes and Jewish Hospitals, it now represents a cross-section of the broader community.

Many other aspects of hospital life, such as medical technology and health care options, have also changed dramatically. But one focus remains the same. Barnes and Jewish Hospital were founded, through generous donations, to provide medical care to patients of any religion or economic background—and today, Barnes-Jewish Hospital continues to offer the same broad-based care, thanks to the continued generosity of the community.
