After struggling with Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and declining lung function, Tom Williamson faced the urgent need for a double lung transplant. With expert care at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and support from his transplant nurse and care team, he successfully underwent surgery. After three months of recovery and rehabilitation, Tom regained his strength and left his oxygen tank behind.

Grateful for his new lungs and inspired by his experience, Tom and his wife Linda established a planned gift to support lung transplant patients and research, helping others navigate recovery with the care and resources they need.

This , we honor patients like Tom and the life-changing impact of organ donation.

is a time to recognize the strength of survivors and the power of community. ❤️

When Joe Koenig was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2017, he faced two complex surgeries. During his recovery from the second surgery, he was temporarily unable to speak as he healed and learned his cancer had spread to his lymph nodes. Still recovering, he then began the next phase of his treatment: intensive radiation and its grueling side effects. Today, Joe is giving back. As a mentor and advocate, he lives out what he calls a “survivor’s obligation” to support others facing head and neck cancer.

Honor Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month by making a gift to support the Head and Neck Tumor Center at Siteman Cancer Center where innovation and patient-centered support are changing lives. ➡️ https://ow.ly/h28n50YCWGV

New research from WashU Medicine, supported in part by the Foundation, reveals a surprising cause of chronic organ rejection: drainage vessels in donor organs that aren’t working properly.

Led by Dr. Daniel Kreisel and Dr. Hailey Shepherd, the study found that when these vessels don’t drain sugar molecules called hyaluronan, scar tissue builds up and damages the organ even if it is otherwise a perfect match. In experiments with mice, treatments that cleared the sugar or helped the vessels heal prevented this damage, showing a possible path for future therapies.

This Transplant Awareness Month, you can help fund more research that gives transplant patients a healthier future. 💚https://ow.ly/cQlN50YCskB

April is and a time to celebrate the life-changing impact of organ donation. 💚 Kim Saalborn, a longtime donor to the Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s transplant programs, knows this firsthand. This March, she celebrated 30 years since receiving a kidney from her sister, Glena.

Her son Scott, who inherited polycystic kidney disease from Kim, recently received a life-saving kidney from his lifelong best friend, Nate. Scott’s transplant was performed robotically by Dr. Adeel Khan at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, showcasing how innovation is improving recovery and outcomes for patients.

Stories like the Saalborns’ reflect what is possible through continued advancements in transplant care. Support the future of transplantation and help expand what is possible for patients ➡️ https://ow.ly/BEZx50YBYXt

Our Story

As part of the 1996 merger of Barnes Hospital and Jewish Hospital, The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital was born, carrying forward a rich history of philanthropy from both institutions.

Over time, much has changed at the Foundation. In 2011, its original name—the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation—became The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The board of directors also has evolved. Once required to have 20 board members each from the former Barnes and Jewish Hospitals, it now represents a cross-section of the broader community.

Many other aspects of hospital life, such as medical technology and health care options, have also changed dramatically. But one focus remains the same. Barnes and Jewish Hospital were founded, through generous donations, to provide medical care to patients of any religion or economic background—and today, Barnes-Jewish Hospital continues to offer the same broad-based care, thanks to the continued generosity of the community.
