In 1967, Dr. William Monafo opened the specialty burn care unit at St. John's Hospital in Creve Coeur. Since then, the burn center at Mercy Hospital has been continually serving children and adults from across the region who need care for burns or frostbite.
Dr. Monafo's partner and successor, Dr. Vatche Ayvazian continued the tradition, and then passed the torch to Dr. Michael Smock who is the current medical director of the Mercy Burn Center.
