As we celebrate Black History Month, it’s important to acknowledge the systemic barriers that still shape access and outcomes in mental healthcare. The “Dismantling Discrimination: Antidiscrimination and Social Policy in Marriage and Family Therapy Practice” and “Navigating Client-Generated Prejudice” chapters in AAMFT’s Systemic Ethics Textbook examine how discrimination can show up in therapy and the ethical responsibility therapists hold in advancing equitable, culturally responsive care.

Therapists must be prepared to challenge bias, respond thoughtfully to prejudiced dynamics in session, and cultivate inclusive environments where every client feels recognized and respected.

Children’s Mental Health Week shines a spotlight on the vital work therapists do to support kids and teens. The “Ethics in Working with Children and Adolescents” chapter in AAMFT’s Systemic Ethics Textbook takes a close look at the unique ethical challenges of working with minors, including confidentiality, informed consent, and navigating parent/guardian involvement.

When therapists lead with ethical, developmentally attuned care, they help create safe, empowering spaces where young clients can truly thrive.
