That seal bark at 2 AM?

That’s croup—and it can feel scary, but here are some tips to help.

WHAT IS CROUP?
Swelling in the upper airway (voice box and windpipe) that causes:
 -Barky, seal-like cough
 -Hoarse voice
-Stridor (high-pitched sound when breathing in)
 -Usually worse at night

HOME MANAGEMENT FOR MILD CROUP:
✅ Keep them CALM (crying makes it worse)
✅ Try steam—run a hot shower and sit in the bathroom for 15-20 min
✅ Try cold air—step outside or open the freezer
✅ Keep them hydrated (small frequent sips)
✅ Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever/comfort
✅ Run a humidifier if the air is dry
✅ Honey for cough (only if over 1 year old)
✅ Watch their breathing closely - watching for increased work of breathing or struggling to breathe. Breathing should be effortless and quiet.

Seek Care Emergently if
🚨 Stridor (squeaky, loud breathing with each breath in) when calm or resting
🚨 Struggling to breathe
🚨 Retractions (skin pulling in at ribs or neck)
🚨 Bluish lips, face, or skin
🚨 Excessive drooling or can’t swallow
🚨 Lethargic or difficult to wake
🚨 Signs of dehydration (no tears, dry mouth, fewer wet diapers)

Or if something in your gut says something’s off!

Most cases are mild and improve with home care—but knowing the red flags helps you stay calm and act fast when needed.

Comment CROUP below and I’ll send you the full quick-reference, evidence-based blog post with everything you need to know!

Because prepared parents are empowered parents. 💗

Foods to avoid and why ⬇️

The list is shorter than you think.
Actually avoid:
❌ Honey (risk of infant botulism)

❌ Cow’s milk as main beverage.. it can displace nutrients, cause iron deficiency, and potential for stomach issues

❌Unpasteurized drinks of food .. increases risk for harmful bacteria exposure

❌ Choking hazards: whole grapes, nuts, popcorn, hot dog rounds, hard candy

❌ Added salt/sugar — Taste preferences are formed during this early time and regularly consuming foods with high salt or added sugar may take up space in their tiny bellies for other more nutrient dense foods… not to mention higher intakes of these foods “may” impact disease risk long term.

SAVE this recipe for a quick sweet addition to your toddler’s valentine plate!

A sure fire recipe for keeping tiny tummies full and tiny brains focused!

Skip the gummy, hard, round candies and choose bigger, softer options.

*disclaimer: the few bites with sprinkles on them DO have added sugar (for bigger kiddos and mom and dad 😉)

INGREDIENTS
✨1.5 smashed banana
✨3/4 cup nut butter (we used almond)
✨1/4 cup smashed freeze dried strawberries
✨1 tsp vanilla
✨2 TBSP unsweetened coconut flakes
✨1 TBSP chia seeds
✨1 tsp cinnamon
✨1/4 cup almond flour
✨Additional 1/4 cup crushed freeze dried strawberries

✅Mix everything in a large bowl (except additional
freeze dried strawberries)
✅Roll into balls
✅Roll balls into the freeze dried strawberry powder
Enjoy!

❌Skip the sprinkles for little ones under 2.
The AAP recommends ZERO grams of added sugar for kiddos under 2. Added sugar can crowd out more nutrient dense options, shapes taste buds toward sweets, and even increases cavity risk.

🥜Nut butters are so important to introduce early for allergy prevention and healthy fats.. but thick, sticky globs can easily become a choking hazard. If your base is too thick, add extra mashed banana or applesauce.

⚠️⚠️Alternatively, for babies 6+ months, smash the ball and use it as a spread on toast!

DO NOT 👇🏻

Do not try this if
-object is sharp, jagged, pointy
-signs of bleeding or trauma
-child is in distress

Seek care first!

Also try not to stick anything up the nose to try and retrieve the object. You may push it further back!

Have you had to use this before?

If you’re ready to learn even more first aid skills for your little one, we’d love to have you join one of our upcoming courses!

Baby tips! 👇🏻

1. Babies mostly breathe through their nose and if they have a blocked nose it makes it challenging for them to breathe, but also, eat and sleep! If congested, try to use saline and suction (a bulb syringe or Nose Frida) to clear it.

2. It is normal for them to have periodic or irregular breathing. Breathe breathe breathe….pause… breath.. but they should never have long periods without breathing or skin color changes, or be having difficulty breathing.

3. Check the temperature under the arm or rectally using a digital thermometer..

4. Temperature greater than 100.4 or higher needs emergent evaluation!

5. It’s okay (and encouraged) to ask people to not kiss your baby! You might hurt some feelings but your baby will be safer!

What else would you add??
