Fish Fryday Review

Fish Fryday Review Reviewing St. Louis area fish frys during the Lenten season. We like to help promote area fish frys, try different fish frys each week, and eat a lot of fish

We love all fish frys, so we decided to create a comprehensive database of St. Louis area fish frys and reviews of them on our website. We also look to have fish fry schedules along with photos of each stop along the way. Keep checking in with us to see where we will be each week, and which ones really stood out from the pack.

St. Justin the Martyr - 3-29-2019

Overall (4 of 5)
St. Justin’s was a solid, classic Lenten fish fry in St. Louis. Nice work! Great food, great folks, a dedicated group of parish volunteers, a quilt raffle, a separate carry out station, and kids running around all contribute to the character of this fish fry. I’d go there for the food alone. Their hand-breaded cod is up there with the best I’ve had, and the unique, delicious, homemade(!) side dishes were a definite draw. Also, they have BEETS! Not too exciting for most folks, but it is for some! If you’re looking for a place to meetup with other families or friends to enjoy comraderie, fish, desserts and maybe win a quilt, you should go to this fish fry. They don’t have one every week, so schedule your fish frys accordingly! I’d give this one a 5 out of 5, but having two lines and a crowded flow around the room wasn’t the best layout I’ve seen.

Fish and Main Dishes (5 of 5)
VARIETY: Fried Cod, Baked Cod, Fish Tacos, Spaghetti Plate, and a Fish, Spaghetti, or Mac ‘n’ Cheese Plate for the kids. The Boy Scouts (I think) were also selling cheese pizza slices from Papa John’s. Simple selections, delicious fish.

TASTE: The cod was very good. It was hand-breaded and cooked almost to perfection. It was good, and I would get it again.

VALUE: Adult plates are $10 for fried and baked cod with 3 (yes 3) sides, $10 for fish tacos with 2 sides, $5 for a spaghetti plate with 2 sides, or baked or fried cod sandwiches with 1 side. All entrees come with complimentary dessert and beverage. Beverages include coffee, tea, lemonade, or water. I opted for the 3-side plate so I could sample more of the sides, and I thought the value for the amount of food was worthwhile. I could have used bigger pieces of cod, but maybe that’s because it was so good! See the menu in the pictures for more information.

CONDIMENTS: Bottles of ketchup, tartar sauce, and parmesan cheese.

Side Dishes (5 of 5)
VARIETY: Spaghetti, Bob’s Mac ‘n’ Cheese, Green Beans, Kathy’s Beets, Dot’s Slaw, Applesauce.

TASTE: So many delicious sides. I was able to sample all but the applesauce, which, if you’ve read other reviews isn’t a surprise. I don’t usually do the applesauce. Too many other things to taste! All of the side dishes (except the applesauce) were made by parishioners, which is definitely an added bonus. Its great to have devoted people helping out the school and church! Back to the taste… The slaw had crumbled ramen noodles in it, which I really loved. So good. The spaghetti is one of the highlights of the fish fry (or so I’ve been told). I concur with all the hype. It was delicious. The sauce was a little sweet, which is OK with me. The mac and cheese was also very good. It had some sort of crispy topping that was good. Green beans were good too. Then there’s the beets. I’ve never had beets at a fish fry. They had diced onions in them just like Mom used to make! Wow, who ever would have thought that Kathy’s beets would have knocked it out of the park, right? All were good or heavy-sized portions. St. Justin’s does the sides right!

VALUE: All were good or heavy-sized portions, and extra sides are $2 each. Great value for the quality provided!

Beverages and Desserts (5 of 5)
BEVERAGES: Tea, lemonade, water, and coffee were complimentary with dinner. They had a variety of soda, gatorade, and wine & beer available for sale, too. Too many options to list them all. Soda $1, gatorade $2, and the wind and beer said “free will donations,” whatever that means. Surely its not free beer!

DESSERTS: Included with dinner, the desserts had a tremendous amount of options, all wrapped on paper plates. Many of the less-obvious desserts were individually labeled. This never occurred to me, but what a great idea! I’d bet half the time the unknown delicious desserts go uneaten because of the uncertainly of what they’re getting. I know what I’m getting, because I pick something with chocolate 99.9% of the time! Plenty to choose from in that regard, too. I also noticed a section of the dessert table that was “Sugar Free.” Equal opportunity bakers over there!

Atmosphere and Extras (4 of 5)
The atmosphere was your basic gymnasium fish fry feel. Kids echoing around the room, chatter among adults, a line of people, sports banners marking achievements, etc. It was a little crowded trying to navigate around the room. Table were close together, and the whole room was separated by the dessert table. I’d put a gap in the middle of it to allow people to walk thru without disturbing people sitting at the tables. That’s one of my only complaints though. They were raffling off a couple of gorgeous quilts, too. I love seeing stuff like that, especially when the kids are involved. Lastly, they did have a carry out area in one corner of the gym. I’m assuming those people were being served much faster than the “dine-in” line.

Signage, Flow, and Line (2 of 5)
There was a sign out front indicating fish fry, and it was pretty clear where it was being held once you entered the parking lot. The flow started out great…down the hallway, in the backside doors to the gym, up to the cashier. The line moved FAST! Then I realized that was only to pay. After paying, you had to walk thru a bunch of crowded tables across the gym to wait in another line. That’s my other complaint. I thought it was awkward. The condiments were at the end of the line (as they should be), and the concession stand behind that was selling the extra beverages…perfect, except we needed additional hands to be able to carry all of that. The second line seemed to move a lot slower, but hey, you get 3 sides with your dinner, so that extra side takes a little bit longer. Maybe it was the rambunctious toddler who couldn’t sit still that made the line seem like it was moving slower than it should have….probably was.

Our Lady of Providence – 3/22/19

Overall (3 of 5)
For this week, I filled in for our trusted Fish Fry reviewer due to conflicting commitments. After hearing about Nathan’s experience the last week with said 2 year-old, I decided to be completely obnoxious and strap her into a giant stroller. This would have probably worked in a gymnasium; however, the location of this week’s fish fry was in the smallest school cafeteria I’ve ever been in. It definitely took some talent and patience to navigate the skinny walkways around all of the big round tables to get to the back of the line. The people I encountered were extremely helpful and polite. They were empathetic which I appreciated.

I decided to get there early not knowing what kind of line or demand I would encounter. I was glad I did. The line was already to the back of the room when I pulled up with my stroller, but it moved quickly. They even offered snacks (fried mushrooms) while waiting. There was also a separate line in a different room for to-go orders, which was nice.

Everything was cash or check, which is annoying for someone who never carries cash, but understandable.
I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with the ladies who joined us at our table. They even offered to buy me a glass of wine. I really wanted to accept, but I decided against it since I was on borrowed time with my daughter.

Fish and Main Dishes (3 of 5)
VARIETY: Fried Cod, Fried Butterfly Shrimp, Catfish nuggets, Fried Frog Legs, Jack Salmon

TASTE: I chose the combo of Fried Cod and Catfish nuggets. The cod was average, nothing special. I really liked the catfish nuggets. The ladies I shared the table with said they came for the frog legs. I wished I had tried them, they looked amazing!

VALUE: Adult plates are $10, child’s plates (ages 4-12) were $5, and under that eat for free! See the menu in the pictures for more information. Each adult meal includes 2 sides, 2 hush puppies, bread and butter, dessert and coffee. Canned Drinks, bottled water, iced tea & lemonade are available for $1 and beer and wine is available for $3. It is a fair value for the size and quality of the fish. A la carte piece of cod is sold for $3 each.

CONDIMENTS: There were a variety of condiments on each table ranging from ketchup to tartar sauce all from bottles.

Side Dishes (4 of 5)
VARIETY: Cole slaw, green beans, French fries, meatless spaghetti and mac & cheese

TASTE: The mac & cheese was pretty good as were the green beans. I don’t like slaw and didn’t want the mess of spaghetti so I didn’t try either. I also didn’t try the French fries, but they looked good. The hush puppies were really dry and over fried. They almost crumbled to dust in my hands.

VALUE: Portion sizes for our dinners were generous, and extra side prices were not listed on the menu.

Beverages and Desserts (3 of 5)
BEVERAGES: Tea, lemonade, water, 1% milk, and coffee were complimentary with dinner. They offered sodas, bottled water and beer/wine at additional cost.

DESSERTS: Included with dinner, the desserts we a little skimpy, but we still found a delicious piece of yellow cake with chocolate icing (my favorite) and a brownie with powdered sugar. If all else fells, she’ll eat a brownie for sure!

Atmosphere and Extras (3 of 5)
The atmosphere was chaotic and cramped. You couldn’t move anywhere without saying excuse me or waiting for someone else to go first. There were way too many tables crammed into the space with very little room between tables. The people as I said before were very nice. I really enjoyed everyone I encountered. Next time I might just get it to go.

Signage, Flow, and Line (5 of 5)
There were two entrances and signs to both. I went to the one that involved stairs first because it was the closest to the parking lot, but quickly realized I wasn’t going to be able to go that way. I rounded the corner and found the second entrance which is also the to-go entrance. There was no wait to pay and the people taking money were extremely helpful and nice. I only had wished they accepted credit cards. Luckily, I had my checkbook! As I mentioned before, I got there early and the line was already pretty long, but it moved very quickly which I appreciated.

St. Peter's in Kirkwood - 3/15/2019

Overall (4 of 5)
The second fish fry of the year was a successful one. I took my 2-year old toddler by myself to this fish fry, so I was prepared for just about anything after the meltdown on week 1. Fortunately for everyone in the immediate vicinity, she was almost a perfect angel this week

St. Peter’s fish fry in Kirkwood pretty much hit all the stops. The line wasn’t too long, the menu was diverse, the food was good, the people and staff were very friendly, and the place was kept very clean. Since this was our first time at St. Peter’s, I wasn’t exactly sure which door to go in, but when in doubt, follow the people headed towards the building, and follow that nose!

For the first time on a fish fry menu I saw fried Gloucester style cod, which, I still have no idea how it varies from good old fashioned fried cod. It was good. I wasn’t floored by it, but I also didn’t leave any on the plate! I opted for the half and half combo in order to try the shrimp.

The staff was so nice and friendly that they helped me carry my two trays (yes trays!) since I was carrying the toddler, too. You gotta love having cafeteria trays. It just seems to work so much better than styrofoam or paper plates. More fish frys need reusable trays!

The carry out was in a totally separate room with an equally long line of people, so that seemed like kind of a bummer for those folks who had to endure the wait and then drive home to eat.

The fish fry is in the gym with plenty of space for people, the line, the extras, and kids to play a little bit. There wasn’t a huge amount of space for kids to run around, nor was it necessarily a play area, but kids will be kids and they gotta spend the energy somehow!

Fish and Main Dishes (3 of 5)
VARIETY: Fried Gloucester Cod , Baked Cod, Fried Butterfly Shrimp. Fried Gloucester Cod, Grilled Cheese, or Chicken Nuggets for the kids.

TASTE: The cod was pretty good. Not my favorite, but not bad. I can’t comment on how Gloucester-y it was, however. The fried shrimp was pretty standard. I tasted a bit of Annabelle’s grilled cheese and it was definitely worthy.

VALUE: Adult plates are $9, kids plates $5, and Sandwich dinners for $5. See the menu in the pictures for more information. Each adult meal includes 2 sides, 2 hush puppies, french bread and butter, a desert, and coffee, lemonade, milk or tea. It is a fair value for the size and quality of the fish. A la carte piece of cod is sold for $3 each. They also had shrimp cocktail (10 shrimp) for $6.

CONDIMENTS: Individual packets of ketchup, tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, plus bottles of malt vinegar and hot sauce.

Side Dishes (4 of 5)
VARIETY: French fries, green beans, slaw, applesauce, italian tossed salad, Mac & Cheese.

TASTE: The mac & cheese was my favorite. Very delicious and creamy. My toddler didn’t eat it, but somehow she hasn’t acquired a taste for it yet. The cole slaw was vinegar based and pretty good. They serve it in a separate cup so it didn’t ooze all over everything else. The green beans were fine and so were the fries. Pretty standard stuff. The salad looked like salad in a bag, which is fine, but I didn’t get a taste of the applesauce.

VALUE: Portion sizes for our dinners were pretty decent, and extra sides were only $1 each. Great value!

Beverages and Desserts (3 of 5)
BEVERAGES: Tea, lemonade, water, 1% milk, and coffee were complimentary with dinner. They had the Boy Scouts pouring drinks which is always nice to see. I’m not sure if they offer beer or wine. I can’t remember seeing an area for that.

DESSERTS: Included with dinner, the desserts had a tremendous amount of options, but seriously lacking on chocolate options. What the heck! We settled for oatmeal raisin cookies and a pumpkin cheesecake which my toddler immediately fell in love with. I wish I had a picture of the face she made when she tasted it!

Atmosphere and Extras (3 of 5)
The atmosphere was your basic gymnasium fish fry feel. Kids echoing around the room, chatter among adults, a line of people, sports banners marking achievements, etc. Despite having my hands full, the atmosphere was full of friendly people smiling. One group had a raffle or something on one side of the gym raising money for their cause. I love seeing stuff like that, especially when the kids are involved.

Signage, Flow, and Line (5 of 5)
Although there was a sign out front indicating fish fry, it blends in with the name of the building, so I didn’t really see it. I followed the traffic of people into the building, so we had no issues finding it. I also got a GREAT parking spot (bonus!). The flow was great…clockwise around the gym, beverages and fundraising along the way. The line went pretty quickly, or so it seemed, especially with an impatient 2-year old. Everyone working the food line was on top of it, so things moved quickly once you got up to the food. We were even helped to our seats after we paid at the end of the line. Credit cards ARE accepted, which is always appreciated.

I'm having trouble getting the website to cooperate, so here's the review from 3/8 at St. Elizabeth's of Hungary:

Overall (4 of 5)
So this was my first attempt at a fish fry with a 2-year old toddler, and let me say, did she want to toddle! Our stay was cut short as we decided to switch to delivery for a number of reasons, so my review of this one will be briefer than the ones to follow (hopefully). Coincidentally, the fish fry closest to our new house is also the last fish fry I formally reviewed

St. Elizabeth’s wasn’t an overly-crowded fish fry that was well marked, had ample parking, great people, great food, and even a drive-thru! We might have driven thru had we known about it, but apparently we knew about it per my last review here a few years ago. One suggestion would be to advertise that from Sappington Road. Who doesn’t love a drive thru!

I really like the diversity of main dishes that were interesting. The cod was good enough to have gotten a second piece, but I opted for the cod-shrimp combo instead. We ordered carry out, and there wasn’t a separate line for carry out. Should have done drive-thru. The sides and desserts were amazing but felt like the portions of the sides were a little light. Maybe it’s just because they were so good we wanted more!

I’d go back to St. Elizabeth’s for a fish fry for the taste of the food alone. I’d probably not get the shrimp again, but opt for the fish tacos and definitely more of the rice pilaf!!

Fish and Main Dishes (5 of 5)
VARIETY: Fried Cod , Baked Cod, Mediterranean Baked Salmon with Sun-dried Tomatoes and Pine Nuts, Fish Tacos. Cheese Pizza for the kids.

TASTE: The cod was pretty darn delicious. Sometimes you don’t know what you’re gonna get with a square or regularly-shaped piece of fish, but this one knocked it out of the park.

VALUE: Prices vary based on the dinner you order. See the menu in the pictures for more information. The Cod dinner is $8, and the kids meal is $5. Each adult meal includes 2 sides, bread, 2 hush puppies, a desert, and a drink. It is a decent value for the size and quality of the fish. A la carte piece of cod is sold for $3 each, fish sandwich for $5, or 2 fish tacos for $6.

CONDIMENTS: I didn’t get the usual solid look at the condiment selection, but they have individual packets of ketchup, tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, and even a thing of parmesan, I believe.

Side Dishes (3 of 5)
VARIETY: Mac & Cheese, Green Beans with Almonds, Wild Rice Pilaf, Applesauce, and Vinegar Cole Slaw.

TASTE: The wild rice pilaf was my favorite. Very delicious. I’d get it again every time. The green beans with almonds were also very delicious. I didn’t get a taste of the mac & cheese or the applesauce, but both looked pretty standardly good. .

VALUE: Portion sizes for our dinners were a little on the skimpy side, compared to other fish frys I’ve been to. Extra sides were $2 each. Ideally the portions would be bigger for an a la carte side.

Beverages and Desserts (3 of 5)
BEVERAGES: Tea, lemonade, water, and coffee were complimentary with dinner. They had the soft drinks pre-poured which was nice. They had beer and wine available, but I didn’t catch the price due to the meltdown that was occurring with our toddler. I believe it was Budweiser products plus a variety of wines.

DESSERTS: Included with dinner, the desserts had a tremendous amount of chocolate options, which works for me! I had a cookie cake sandwich and chocolate chip cookie. Both were fantastic. The dessert table was pretty big and full of deliciousness. Nice work! Extra desserts are $2 each.

Atmosphere and Extras (4 of 5)
Despite chasing a toddler on the verge of a meltdown, the atmosphere was great. They had a keyboard player entertaining the crowd, along with the pastor mingling about, and some people celebrating a 76th birthday. Everyone was friendly. My daughter even got to play with the birthday balloons thanks to our neighbor who was also there. Thank you!

Signage, Flow, and Line (5 of 5)
With signs out on Sappington Road and well-marked entry signs directing you downstairs, this fish fry was easy to find, granted, there’s really only one door to go in. The line moved slower than it seemed like it should have, but it was the first fish fry of the season, and there was a guy playing piano, so it was fine.
