Our Commitment to Quality

At St. Paul Engraving, quality is not a marketing statement—it is a standard that has guided our work since 1976.

For more than five decades, our craftsmen have partnered with mold manufacturers to deliver precision surface texturing and engraving that meets the demanding standards of modern injection molding applications.

Our commitment is built on three core principles:

• Precision craftsmanship — every surface is executed with attention to detail, ensuring textures perform consistently in production environments.

• Customer partnership — we work closely with mold manufacturers and engineers to ensure surface intent aligns with mold/tool geometry and production requirements.

• Reliable turnaround — maintaining efficient workflows so customers receive the quality they expect without unnecessary delays.

Surface engineering requires both advanced technology and skilled craftsmen who understand the importance of accuracy, consistency, and trust.

At St. Paul Engraving, those values have guided our work for over 50 years—and continue to shape every project we take on.

St. Paul Engraving prides itself on integrated manufacturing partnerships because great tooling programs don’t start with machining. They start with early collaboration.

Our role goes beyond applying surface textures. We work alongside mold manufacturers, engineers, and product designers to help develop surface strategies that support both product design and mold manufacturability.

When surface considerations are addressed early in the development process, it opens new opportunities for:

• Expanded design potential
• Improved mold performance
• Reduced secondary processing
• More efficient production timelines

Our team brings decades of experience in laser texturing, precision engraving, and surface engineering—allowing mold manufacturers to deliver more advanced textures, functional surfaces, and consistent results to their customers.

By collaborating early, we help ensure that surface intent aligns with tooling geometry, material behavior, and manufacturing realities.

St. Paul Engraving is more than a service provider; we are a technical partner supporting mold manufacturers from concept through production.

The most effective way to evaluate surface strategy isn’t through drawings or discussions—it’s by seeing the process in production.

At St. Paul Engraving, we invite engineering teams and mold manufacturers into our facility to experience how surface texturing, laser technology, and tooling restoration come together in a fully integrated environment.

During a Shop Tour, you will see:

• 5-axis laser texturing systems in operation across complex mold geometries
• In-house tooling restoration processes, including laser welding and surface refinement
• Integrated workflows that reduce handling, improve accuracy, and shorten lead times
• Real-world applications where early collaboration improves mold performance

These are not presentations—they are working sessions designed for engineers, designers, and tooling professionals.

Whether you are developing a new mold or evaluating improvements to existing tooling, seeing the process firsthand provides clarity that cannot be replicated through specifications alone.

If your team is exploring surface strategies, we invite you to experience St. Paul Engraving's capabilities in person.

Laser texturing is a complete digital process allowing even the most complex custom patterns to be rendered digitally giving the customer the opportunity to make any final adjustments prior to any texture being applied.

Our process is below:
- First, we start with your mold design as a stp or iges file we select the surfaces to be textured.
- Next, we mesh and flatten the surfaces the pattern is to be applied to.
*With the use of high-resolution gray scale images, the pattern is applied to the mesh allowing us to achieve seamless patterns with minimal deformation on even the most complex geometries.
- From here the renderings are created of what the finished part will look like; enabling designers the opportunity to apply final adjustments.

In-House Tooling Restoration-Repair

Tooling damage, repair or modification doesn’t always mean replacement.

In many cases, performance can be fully restored—if the right processes are applied.

At St. Paul Engraving, we support molds and tooling components through a fully integrated, in-house restoration process—eliminating the need to move tooling between multiple vendors.

This example shows a complete restoration workflow:

• Initial condition assessment — evaluating wear and damaged areas
• Laser welding — rebuilding critical surfaces with precision
• Surface refinement and preparation — ensuring geometry and finish are restored
• Reapplication of laser — returning the tool to production-ready condition

By keeping this process under one roof, we reduce:

handling and transfer risk

lead times between operations

variability between processes

The result is a more controlled, repeatable restoration process—delivering tooling back into production with confidence.

Tooling lifecycle support is most effective when it is fully integrated.

Complex mold geometries demand more than traditional surface treatments.

At St. Paul Engraving, our advanced 5-axis laser texturing systems allow us to apply engineered surface patterns across contoured mold cavities, complex geometries, and intricate tooling features with exceptional precision.

Unlike conventional processes, 5-axis laser technology enables:

• Uniform texture application across complex surfaces — maintaining consistency on curved or angled mold geometries.

• Controlled depth and pattern fidelity — ensuring surface features remain consistent throughout the cavity.

• Reduced secondary processing — eliminating many masking, blasting, or manual finishing steps.

For mold manufacturers, this means greater design freedom and more reliable production outcomes.

When combined with early collaboration during tooling development, laser texturing becomes more than a finishing step—it becomes part of the engineered solution.

🔍 Project Spotlight: Precision Laser Texturing Over EDM + Logo Engraving

At St. Paul Engraving, we continue to deliver high-performance solutions that streamline production and elevate surface aesthetics. This featured mold cavity was both laser textured directly over EDM and precision logo engraved—demonstrating our ability to simplify processes without sacrificing quality.

💡 Why Laser Texture Over EDM?
Traditional methods require additional manual polishing or chemical etching after EDM, increasing lead times and labor. With our advanced laser systems, we eliminate these extra steps, offering:
✔️ Reduced turnaround time
✔️ Consistent texture application across rough EDM surfaces
✔️ Enhanced tool longevity with non-contact processing
✔️ Superior pattern definition, even in hard-to-reach areas

✨ Added Value: The integrated logo engraving was executed in the same setup—delivering precise branding and optimal part traceability without additional tool handling.

By leveraging our state-of-the-art laser technology, customers benefit from a more efficient, repeatable, and cost-effective mold texturing solution.

When should surface texture be considered in mold development?

The answer: earlier than most teams think.

Surface texture should never be the last decision in mold manufacturing. The most successful applications approach surface strategy early—during the design and tooling development stages.

At St. Paul Engraving, we collaborate with mold manufacturers, engineers, and product designers early in the process to ensure surface intent aligns with tooling geometry, material behavior, and manufacturing constraints.

When surface strategy is addressed early, it unlocks important advantages:

• Expanded design potential — textures can be engineered to enhance aesthetics, functionality, and product differentiation.

• Improved mold manufacturability — planning surface treatments early helps avoid geometry conflicts, polishing limitations, and late-stage adjustments.

• More predictable production outcomes — aligning surface intent with tooling strategy reduces revisions and supports consistent results.

Surface engineering is not simply about applying texture.
It’s about ensuring the design vision and mold manufacturing process work together seamlessly.

That collaboration starts early.
