Every April, we join with organizations and individuals to recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)—an annual reminder to "unite survivors, advocates, and communities in the shared commitment to end sexual assault, abuse, and harassment."

This year, we're celebrating 25 years of SAAM by looking back at how far we've come and looking forward to the work still ahead of us. Together, we are fighting for prevention, advocating for survivors, and creating a safer, healthier world for all.

Join us in this mission by attending a SAAM event, educating yourself and your community, and learning more about our work at therowancenter.org.

The Rowan Center’s CEO, Sharon Walker Epps, recently sat down with Nancy Barrow of CT Paid Leave and Beth Hamilton of Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence for an upcoming episode of the CT Paid Leave Podcast.

They talked about what survivors need to feel safe, supported, and able to heal—and how paid leave plays a role in that.

The episode drops this April, during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Stay tuned!

It's Women's History Month, and we're celebrating some of the incredible women who have been instrumental in the movement to end sexual violence.

Chanel Miller is an American writer and artist who was known anonymously as “Emily Doe” in the 2015 Stanford sexual assault case. After her victim impact statement went viral, she revealed her identity in 2019 and published the award-winning memoir Know My Name, helping spark national conversations about sexual assault and survivor justice.

Dr. Judith Herman is an American psychiatrist and author whose work has shaped how we understand trauma, especially in survivors of abuse and violence. Through her book Trauma and Recovery, she introduced key concepts like complex PTSD and outlined a widely used three-stage approach to healing, influencing both clinical practice and broader conversations about trauma and justice.

Amanda Nguyen is an activist and the founder of RISE, a nonprofit dedicated to codifying civil rights. In 2016, she authored the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights Act, which was signed into law by President Obama.

Susan Brownmiller was one of the many women who paved the way in the fight against sexual violence. A feminist, author, and activist, Brownmiller wrote "Against Our Will: Men, Women, and R**e." This 1975 book shaped the way our culture talks about and understands sexual violence.

Black History Month isn't just about history; it's about the work that is still unfolding.

In 2005, Tarana Burke founded Just Be, Inc., and began using the phrase “me too” to help survivors—especially Black girls and women—find each other and begin healing.

When spread globally in 2017, Tarana brought the focus back where it belonged: on survivors, empathy, and building leadership from lived experience. She has always insisted that ending sexual violence is inseparable from racial and gender justice.

We are grateful to Tarana Burke for her decades of steady organizing, centering survivors, telling the truth about systems that harm, and making sure no one has to face trauma alone.

Preventing sexual assault, abuse, and exploitation means stopping harm before it begins. We prioritize prevention so more children and community members can grow up and live in a society free from sexual violence.

In the 2024/2025 fiscal year, our Education Department delivered 795 presentations, partnering with 45 schools, community agencies, and local colleges.

Together, we reached over 22,000 community members, including students of all ages, educators, healthcare professionals, mental health clinicians, parents, community leaders, and other stakeholders.

By equipping both children and adults with practical knowledge and tools, we are helping to build a culture rooted in empathy, safety, and accountability.

If you are interested in having our prevention educators come to your school or community center to present, please email lcampbell@therowancenter.org

Black History Month celebrates the courageous leaders who refused to be silent.

In 1944, Recy Taylor was 24, walking home from church in Alabama, when seven white men kidnapped her at gunpoint and r***d her. They left her on the side of the road.

She reported them.

During Jim Crow, that choice put her life at risk. One man confessed. No one was prosecuted. Her home was burned. An all-white grand jury dismissed the case in minutes.

But she did not take her story back.

Her voice helped ignite a national outcry and shaped the movement for justice that followed. Today, we carry Recy's story forward in how we listen, how we believe survivors, and how we show up each and every day.
