Ever wonder why we put sage in stuffing? 🦃
Today we understand that sage is an antibacterial herb. Our ancestors also knew that to ensure food safety, it was best to add an abundance of sage to the stuffing or 'belly pudding' and rub the bird inside and out with salt before filling the cavity (where we know today bacteria is most likely to form). Scientific studies can now help us understand why many of our 'classic flavor combinations', demonstrate that our ancestors knew a great deal about preserving food, food quality and health - leading to the old adage that 'The cook is half a physician'.
Sage is also synonymous with wisdom. In fact, it might be said that many an 'old sage' gained her wisdom from the use of sage. "As far back as 1597, herbalist John Gerard wrote that sage was 'singularly good for the head and brain and quickeneth the nerves and memory.' Half a century later, Nicholas Culpeper, claimed the herb 'heals the memory, warming and quickening the senses".
The Latin name for Sage is Salvia which translates to "Life"...so add some life to your holiday foods this season with Salvia officinalis or our common perennial garden sage!

Many of you have asked how I started with herbs. As an avid reader and a child that spent plenty of time outdoors, I experimented. I ate from the plants in our garden and our neighborhood, most neighbors shied away from chemicals granting me the perfect environment to develop a taste for natural food. Always know the plant and its' properties before using or eating. In some cases the dose can be either remedy or severe poison. Many of you have herbs in your kitchen right now, in the form of tea. It is time to rely first on our own knowledge to help heal our bodies before reaching for the physicians prescription pad. Obviously if the medical issue is beyond your know-how call for help. In the case of simple colds, scrapes, bruises, or upset stomachs we can and should try natural methods first. Happy reading.

Product Description
The wild meadows full of Mullein hold so much therapeutic wisdom in their soft green rosettes and brilliant yellow flowers. Mullein has been used for a multitude of reasons and a wide spectrum of needs for centuries by those who first knew, used and cultivated a relationship with Mother Earth and her wild medicine.

Mullein has traditionally been used topically to soften and protect skin as well as offer support with skin trauma, skin affected by the cold, and tender skin in need of an herbal hug.

The wild Great Mullein grows in the fields of Stag Oaks Farm. During their peak, the fat little bumblebees pollinate the beautiful yellow flowers on the stalks of the mullein and add to their already packed pollen sacs. They hum and buzz happily as they fly around the abundance of flowers and plants.

The wild harvested ingredients in the Mullein Salve were harvested with the highest respect, intention, and ethics. An intimate connection to the earth generally looks like an abundance of time walking, taking in the smells, noises, and sights, and learning details about what grows where and the growing patterns. This process is slow, purposeful, mindful, and healing for the mind and heart. Out of this deep love came a yearning to share a part of the beauty and healing abundance with others. This is how Stag Oaks Farm was born.
