He was a veteran of the war in Iraq. He returned with demons that he didn't know how to deal with, as many do. He fell into chemical dependency, as many do.
He came to me for help. He listened. He did all the hard work. It seemed to be paying off. However, 3 months before his 2 year sobriety mark, the demons won.
A family member gave me his 1 year coin and reminded me that I do make a difference, even when I don't think I do.
