Prepping for tomorrow’s Art for Calm collage session at the Rivet! I cut out the woman from a postcard from the 1910s, a page from a very old book of children’s stories, and some modern collage paper. This Sunday, February 8 at 1 pm. As part of the Nervous System Reset series, we will have Art for Calm: Collage! We will start the workshop with a grounding mediation and then use a lovely collection of paper (including lots of vintage Valentine’s Day postcards, some of which are 100 years old) to create a unique and healing masterpiece. Collage is great for those getting started with art. All that is needed are scissors, glue, and creativity! Sign up today at The River’s website. My heart goes out to all the people in Minnesota who are fighting daily to bring back peace to their community. My heart goes out to immigrants nationwide who are under attack in violent and dehumanizing ways. My heart goes out to the families who have lost their loved ones through violence or by being disappeared.

This isn’t about choosing a political side. It’s about treating people with dignity, respect, and kindness. We are better than this.

I stand with the many small businesses who are speaking out against the tragedy happening in this country. It’s so hard to feel helpless right now. But we all have a voice. And I’m choosing to share my voice in my small sphere of influence to say, we need change.

My values have always been kindness and inclusion. I want to build a community where everyone, no matter who you are, feels welcome. But I do not welcome hatred or intolerance in my art classes or in my life.

If this message angers you, ask yourself why? Why do messages of inclusion, love, and kindness go against your own values?

For those of you participating in the nationwide buying strike today, remember your small businesses. Support them and pay in cash. Remember who has the real power.

Another art journal example! I let myself wander through the page with shades of orange, black, and gold — and a sprinkle of something extra: glow-in-the-dark stencil butter! ✨🕯️

We hear a lot about “triggers,” those things that activate us and give us anxiety or fear. But we don’t hear a lot about “glimmers.” Glimmers are those small moments in our day that bring us joy, whether it be seeing a beautiful fall leaf, getting a kiss on the nose from a puppy, or hearing a baby’s infectious laugh. Looking for and finding glimmers can help us get through tough days and challenging times.

On Sunday, November 2, I’ll be leading an art journaling class dedicated to glimmers! We’ll focus on those small moments and then create an art journaling spread. Included in the class is a free starter art journal, perfect for mixed media. And we will also learn a technique for art journaling - stencil butter!

I used stencil butter on the mandala above to create a three dimensional texture, then painted over it with watercolor to give it a scratchy appearance.
