Lifestyles for the Disabled

Lifestyles for the Disabled Since 1994, LFD remains steadfast in its mission to showcase the genuine capabilities of individuals with developmental disabilities.

We strives to redefine perceptions & foster inclusivity on a global scale. Lifestyles was founded in 1994 as a collaborative initiative between parents, community organizations, local business owners, and developmentally disabled adults (program participants). This partnership emerged from a shared understanding of the significant gap in services and opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities in Staten Island. The primary goal of Lifestyles was to create programs that could provide individuals with real-world work experiences in actual, integrated community settings. This was in response to the recognition that many individuals with developmental disabilities were not receiving sufficient opportunities to interact with the broader community or engage in meaningful employment. By leveraging the resources and expertise of various stakeholders—parents who understood the specific needs of their loved ones, local business owners who saw the value of inclusive practices, and community organizations that were familiar with support systems—the program was designed to provide participants with realistic, hands-on job experiences. The collaborative efforts of these groups helped to develop a range of programs that placed participants in work environments where they could gain skills, build confidence, and become active contributors to the local economy. These settings were carefully chosen to ensure that the individuals could practice vocational skills while being supported by mentors or job coaches who helped them navigate the challenges of the workplace. Lifestyles also recognized the importance of expanding beyond the immediate community, ensuring that individuals had access to opportunities outside Staten Island as well. This expanded their exposure and allowed for even greater integration into society at large, helping to break down stereotypes and promote inclusivity. Overall, the creation of Lifestyles was a forward-thinking response to the challenges faced by people with developmental disabilities, emphasizing empowerment through work and community involvement. The program not only offered valuable vocational experiences but also fostered a sense of belonging and independence for its participants.

Our Pre-Vocational group recently visited the Noble Maritime Museum at Snug Harbor, where they learned all about the sailors and ships that shaped Staten Island’s past. 🚢 They even got hands-on experience creating a print using an old-fashioned printing press! 🖨️. On our recent trip to the Canstruction Exhibit, we saw some amazing artistic creations made from unopened cans of food. Not only is this an incredible art display, but it is also for a good cause. Once the exhibit ends, the cans are donated to City Harvest to help feed those in need.

A Message from Commissioner Baer About the Federal Government Shutdown and SNAP Benefits

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

It is hard to believe that we once again find ourselves facing the effects of a federal government shutdown. While we monitor the impending cuts to the Medicaid system, I want to take a moment to share important information about how this situation could more immediately affect Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in New York State.

Due to the ongoing shutdown, November SNAP benefits may be delayed. SNAP benefits cannot be issued by the state unless federal funding is authorized. That means that if the federal shutdown continues beyond November 1, millions of New Yorkers—including people with developmental disabilities, their families and the dedicated staff who support them—could experience a disruption in this essential program. For many, this could mean serious challenges in putting food on the table.

Governor Hochul and the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA), the agency that oversees SNAP benefits, are working closely with federal partners to advocate for the release of funds needed to continue providing these critical benefits. In the meantime, New York State is taking steps to help ensure that people do not go hungry. The Governor has committed more than $106 million to food banks and other emergency food providers to help strengthen emergency food relief efforts throughout the state to address what will likely be a substantial increase in requests for emergency food assistance. The Governor has also launched a new website to help New Yorkers find needed food assistance resources at Impact of Federal Cuts on New Yorkers: Take Action & Share Your Story | Governor Kathy Hochul.

For those living in OPWDD or provider-operated certified housing, your food access will not be interrupted as providers will continue to ensure that food is provided. However, if you receive OPWDD services and live independently in the community, and you believe you may not have enough food, please reach out to your Care Manager right away for help.

For ongoing updates about SNAP benefits, please visit otda.ny.gov/shutdown.

If you would like to share how SNAP benefits make a difference in your life, you can Call your member of Congress now to let them know how these cuts would impact you, your family, and your community.

We know this uncertainty can be stressful, but please know that we are working tirelessly to minimize any disruption and to make sure New Yorkers continue to have access to food and other essential supports. We will get through this together.

Sincerely,

Willow Baer
Commissioner

About Us

Lifestyles for the Disabled began operating in 1994 through the collaboration of parents, community organizations, local business people and a group of developmentally disabled adults (program participants). Each group recognized the need to develop programs that provide participants with realistic work settings and experiences within the Staten Island community and beyond.
