We realize the pain and anxiety UTI (urinary tract infection) symptoms can cause while you are awaiting the results of a urine culture for 2 to 4 days. As physicians, we often are forced to make assumptions as to what particular antibiotic might work for your particular infection. We must also consider any allergies or sensitivities you might have or other medication you might be taking that could interact with particular antibiotics.

At Consultants in Urology, we now have state-of-the-art technology to obtain a culture result within hours of your submitting a urine sample. In other certain circumstances, a standard culture test might not reveal a particular organism/infection that we can detect with this newer, more accurate technology.

We are here to expedite your care and treatment of your UTI. Call our office (718-233-1300) or go on our weblink (www.urologyconsult.com) for an immediate appointment if you have chronic or persistent urinary tract infection, or symptoms of a UTI where you have been told that your culture was negative. We hope to be able to help you.

Sincerely,
Our dedicated staff at CIU.

There is nothing more aggravating than being uncomfortable or in pure pain from UTI (urinary tract infection) symptoms while awaiting the results of a culture for 2 to 4 days. Often, we make assumptions as to what particular antibiotic might work in your situation, of course considering any allergies or sensitivities you might have or other medication you might be taking that could interact with a particular antibiotic.

At Consultants in Urology, we now have the technology to obtain a culture result within hours of your submitting a urine sample. In other certain circumstances, a standard culture test might not demonstrate a particular organism/infection that we can detect with this newer technology.

We want to expedite your care and treatment of your UTI. Call our office for an immediate appointment if you have chronic or persistent urinary tract infection, or symptoms of a UTI where you have been told that your culture was negative. We hope to be able to help you.

Do you experience:
- Urinary Frequency
- Waking Up to Urinate
- Weak Urinary Stream
- Urinary Hesitancy
- Stream Intermittency
- Sensation of Incomplete Bladder Emptying or
- Urinary Urgency ?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a diagnosis characterized by proliferation of the cellular elements of the prostate. BPH is the most common cause of the lower urinary tract symptoms mentioned above.

Typically men over the age of 50 develop prostate enlargement.

The prostate is a gland that is found only in men. It helps make semen, the fluid that contains s***m. The prostate surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body.) As men age, their prostate gland grows larger. When the prostate is enlarged, it may constrict the flow of urine. Nerves located within the prostate and bladder may also play a role in causing bothersome symptoms including urinary frequency, urinary urgency, hesitancy, interrupted or weak stream.

There are a number of treatments for BPH which may significantly improve quality of life. Treatment options include medication and minimally invasive prostate procedures which can be performed right in the office.

If you think you may have Benign Prostate Hyperplasia, contact 718-233-1300 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Marc Plawker or Dr. Joel Sherman. We look forward to seeing you.

Kidney stones affect more than half a million people each year. Affecting both men and women, kidney stones can be severely painful and demand immediate attention.

The kidneys perform the essential function of removing waste products from the blood and regulating excess fluid levels. These waste products and excess fluid are removed through the urine. Dehydration, obesity, diets high in salt and certain medical conditions can cause you to develop stones which can interfere with normal kidney function. Painful or frequent urination with back pain and visible blood in the urine may all be signs of a kidney stone.

When urine has a high concentration of minerals and salts they can form kidney stones. Kidney stones can start off small but can grow larger in size. Some stones may stay in the kidney and not cause any problems at all while other stones may move from the kidney down to the ureter ( the tube that drains urine from the kidneys into the bladder) If the stone is too large and cannot pass through the ureter it can become obstructed block the flow of urine and become very painful. Emergency procedures to relieve the obstruction may be necessary.

Kidney ultrasounds, X-rays, and CT imaging are just some of the ways to diagnose kidney stones. Increasing your water intake, medication and pain relievers may sometimes help to manage small stones. However, large stones that become obstructed and cause pain may need surgical intervention. Ureteral stent placement to open the ureter and treat obstruction of the urine flow may sometimes be needed on an urgent basis. Shockwave lithotripsy or ureteroscopy are other surgical procedures for kidney stones.
