Kissing your baby changes your breast milk. Did you know that the undeniable urge to cover your baby in kisses serves a biological purpose? When a mother kisses her baby, she samples the pathogens on baby’s face, which then travel to mom’s lymphatic system. Mom’s body then creates antibodies to fight those pathogens, which baby receives through breast milk. What?! Amazing, right?

Pregnancy indigestion was definitely less painful than trying to get a toddler to eat their dinner.

“It is common for the pacifier to fall from the mouth soon after the infant falls asleep; even so, the protective effect persists throughout that sleep period. “

Protective effect info ⬇️

“Therefore, we recommend that pacifiers be offered to infants as a potential method to reduce the risk of SIDS. The pacifier should be offered to the infant when being placed for all sleep episodes, including daytime naps and nighttime sleeps. This is a US Preventive Services Task Force level B strength of recommendation based on the consistency of findings and the likelihood that the beneficial effects will outweigh any potential negative effects.”

Using a pacifier is protective, not preventative. If your LO won’t take it, or you choose not to give one- it does *NOT increase the risk of SIDs*- it just returns the risk back to baseline.

Today's sleep tip brought to you by sleep consultant Carianna at All The Sleeps.

Why are my baby's naps so short?

Short naps tend to be a MAJOR pain point for families. Let's explore the reasons why your baby's naps may be stuck at 30-45 minutes:
+ Incorrect timing & number of naps. If your baby's wake windows are too long or too short, that can lead to short naps. If your baby is taking too many or too few naps, that can also play a big role.
+ Poor napping environment. Is your baby's sleep space pitch dark and have white noise? If not, that could be interfering with their naps.
+ Baby is under 5 months of age. Short naps can be developmentally appropriate until after 5 months of age. This doesn't mean you can't still work towards longer naps but we want to be sure to keep our expectations realistic.

+ Baby cannot fall asleep on their own. If your baby doesn't know how to fall asleep on their own, then this makes it hard for them to connect their sleep cycles without your assistance. This leads to those short naps!
+ Baby isn't given space after a short nap. Maybe your baby does know how to fall asleep on their own but as soon as they wake, you swoop in and grab them. This means they never have the chance to practice falling back asleep and going into their next cycle.
