"Concern for behavioral health isn't a sign of weakness. It's part of overall health, just like physical wellbeing. Behavioral health conditions are not "choices" you simply snap out of — they are real and treatable. Getting help isn't something to be ashamed of, but rather a strong, proactive step toward living better."

We sat down with Megan Oxentine, DNP, of Iredell Davis Behavioral Health, to answer some frequently asked questions.

➡️What can patients expect upon arrival?
On arrival, patients go through a brief intake. This includes paperwork, a safety check, and an assessment with a nurse and/or clinician. They will have their belongings reviewed, get oriented to the unit, and meet the staff that will explain the next steps in their care.

➡️What are typical days like?
Days are structured with group therapy, check-ins with staff, and time for rest. Recreational therapy is included to support healing through activities like art, games, and light exercise. These activities help patients build coping skills and reduce stress.

➡️Can patients see or talk to their families?
Visitation hours are scheduled, and patients can stay in touch with family by phone. Special arrangements can also be made for international calls and video visits if needed.

➡️How long is a typical stay?
Most stays are about 5-7 days, dependent upon the patient’s individual needs.

➡️What happens when patients are discharged?
Before leaving, the care team coordinates follow-up care, including referrals for therapy or rehab. Appointments for follow-up will be scheduled through Iredell Davis Behavioral Health Outpatient Clinic or with a provider of the patient's choice.

Do you suffer from chronic pain, but you're afraid of opioids? You have options.

“I think of myself as a carpenter," shares Dr. Rob Theiss of Iredell Pain Management. "I’ve got tools in my toolbox, and opioids are just one tool of many in my toolbox. I reach for them when I feel like they’re necessary, but for most people, they aren’t.”

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. 🟦

Here are five fast facts👇

● In 2024, an estimated 152,810 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the U.S., and an estimated 53,010 will die — making this disease the second-leading cause of cancer deaths overall.

● The average lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is one in 24. Age and a family history of colorectal cancer are important unmodifiable risk factors. Smoking, obesity, and a poor diet are among modifiable risk factors. Most cases are diagnosed in people over age 50.

● Unlike most cancers, colorectal cancer is highly preventable with screening. With early detection, it’s highly treatable. Localized colorectal cancer (the earliest stage) has a 91% five-year survival rate with treatment.

● The most common symptom of colorectal cancer is no symptom. When symptoms are present, they may include blood in or on stool, persistent abdominal discomfort, and unexplained weight loss.

● Black/African Americans have the second-highest mortality rate and incidence rate of colorectal cancer in the U.S. Black Americans are both 35% more likely to die from colorectal cancer and 15% more likely to develop it than non-Hispanic whites.
