"Concern for behavioral health isn't a sign of weakness. It's part of overall health, just like physical wellbeing. Behavioral health conditions are not "choices" you simply snap out of — they are real and treatable. Getting help isn't something to be ashamed of, but rather a strong, proactive step toward living better."
We sat down with Megan Oxentine, DNP, of Iredell Davis Behavioral Health, to answer some frequently asked questions.
➡️What can patients expect upon arrival?
On arrival, patients go through a brief intake. This includes paperwork, a safety check, and an assessment with a nurse and/or clinician. They will have their belongings reviewed, get oriented to the unit, and meet the staff that will explain the next steps in their care.
➡️What are typical days like?
Days are structured with group therapy, check-ins with staff, and time for rest. Recreational therapy is included to support healing through activities like art, games, and light exercise. These activities help patients build coping skills and reduce stress.
➡️Can patients see or talk to their families?
Visitation hours are scheduled, and patients can stay in touch with family by phone. Special arrangements can also be made for international calls and video visits if needed.
➡️How long is a typical stay?
Most stays are about 5-7 days, dependent upon the patient’s individual needs.
➡️What happens when patients are discharged?
Before leaving, the care team coordinates follow-up care, including referrals for therapy or rehab. Appointments for follow-up will be scheduled through Iredell Davis Behavioral Health Outpatient Clinic or with a provider of the patient's choice.
