Iredell Memorial Hospital just earned their fourth consecutive Leapfrog "A"! 🎉🎉🎉

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

“I am so pleased to see our fourth “A” grade in a row from Leapfrog,” said John Green, Iredell Health President & CEO. “Our entire team at Iredell Health sees the importance of quality care to the overall work we do each day. It is exciting to see our hard work recognized once again. We will continue to strive to provide the highest quality and best care for our community!”

Choose quality care. Choose safety. Choose Iredell. 💙

Get to know our first year residents!

This week, we are featuring Nunta Campbell, MD.

You may know Dr. Campbell from her time as a nurse then a nurse practitioner at Iredell Memorial Hospital. 🥼

🩺Why did you decide to become a doctor?
I wanted a career that allowed me to make a direct, meaningful impact on people’s lives every day. Medicine challenges me intellectually, but it also gives me the opportunity to be there to care for people at their most vulnerable moments.

🩺Who is someone that inspires you (inside or outside of healthcare)?
Dr. Carla Pence inspires me to become a doctor because of her genuine passion for caring for people and their families. She devotes her time selflessly, always putting her patients’ well-being first. What I admire most is that she practices medicine not for financial gain, but out of a true desire to help others. Her compassion and dedication motivate me to follow in her footsteps and pursue a career where I can make a real difference in people’s lives.

🩺What has been your favorite rotation thus far?
One of my favorite rotations is the inpatient medicine rotation because it allows me to not only manage patients’ illnesses but also to coordinate their care with other team members and specialists. I enjoy the collaborative environment — working closely with nurses, social workers, and families to address not just the medical aspects of a patient’s condition, but also the social and emotional factors that affect their health.

🩺What is your go-to song to pump you up before a shift?
My go-to song is Imagine by John Lennon. Every time I listen to it, it makes me dream of a world where everyone can live in harmony and peace — where we see each other as equals, without discrimination or suffering. The song’s message reminds me to stay hopeful and compassionate, and to do my part in creating a kinder, more understanding world.

🩺What is one thing you want patients to know about you?
I see each of them as a generous, kind, and selfless teacher. They entrust me with the privilege to learn from their illnesses, participate in their care, support their families, and share in their lives during some of their most vulnerable and challenging moments. Each encounter reminds me that healing extends beyond medicine—it is built on trust, compassion, and the human connection we share.

Because of proceeds raised through Iredell Volunteer sales and the Grateful Patients & Families Fund, Iredell Pediatrics was able to purchase a transcutaneous bilirubin meter. 💙

👶What this means for patients:
Screening newborns for jaundice, while fairly routine, is traditionally assessed using invasive blood samples which can be uncomfortable for newborns and inconvenient for parents. The TcB meter uses a light sensor, enabling swift and painless assessments in-office.

The Iredell Pediatrics team is thrilled to introduce this technology in their practice, easing the burden for patients and their families.

Anxiety — a feeling of fear, worry, or dread — looks different for everyone, but usually involves both physical and emotional responses. You may have sweaty hands, restlessness, muscle tension, or rapid heartbeat. 😰

Falling into this anxiety trap can tear you down.

“I like to use the analogy of walking around with a backpack full of bricks," shared Derick Buggs, MSW, social worker at Iredell Davis Behavioral Health Hospital. "Every time you choose to avoid something, another brick goes in your backpack. Eventually, it wears you down and you fall. If you face your triggers, it’s like taking a brick out of your backpack.”

Wendy Troutman, FNP, MSN, has been named Director of Corporate Wellness! 🎉

A 25-year employee, Wendy will oversee various departments including the Wellness & Diabetes Center, industrial clinics, corporate wellness programming, and Iredell Occupational Medicine.

“Wellness and diabetes are close to my heart as a type 1 diabetic with several diabetic relatives,” shared Wendy. “I’m an eighth-generation Troutman and the health and wellness of this community mean a great deal to me.”

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her large family, including two grandchildren, 10 bonus grandchildren, a goldendoodle named Stevie Nicks, and an Aussiedoodle named Etta James that keep her hopping and bring lots of joy. She enjoys traveling, particularly to Hawaii, where she has visited four times.

“I’ve spent the majority of my adult life working at Iredell. It feels like home.”

Join us in congratulating Wendy!
