What’s in a tone?

Some research shows that non-verbal cues form a higher percentage of communication than the actual words spoken. You think you’re hiding your real feelings, but your partner, who knows you best, is no fool and can read between the lines. Communication cues — like your tone, body language, and words — need to match to be effective. Tone of voice and facial expression are critical for empathy, trust, and connection. Confusing your partner leads to more conflict…

Think about this the next time you and your partner interact. Does your tone match your words and your body language?

Hey! Hi! Hello!

Your “Hello” sets the stage for everything that comes next between you and your partner. We grow up aware of reunions; we know they are important within our family, for children, and in our friendships. Reunions are especially important in our partnerships. Your partner is your primary attachment figure, and quality reunions strengthen the attachment bond. The nervous system relaxes, oxytocin is released, and we feel more secure in our relationship when we greet each other in a friendly, meaningful way. Practice this and see how it creates more positive interactions between you and your partner!

I had such a wonderful time in LA collaborating with my teacher, mentor couple, and friends and .

For those of you who know me or have worked with me, you have heard me get on my soapbox about relationships and how they are the proverbial roof over our heads and the foundation under our feet. The ability to have knowledge, information, and curiosity about one another while holding the container of sensitivity, mutuality, justice, and fairness strengthens our foundation, and then showing each other what we can do in our relationship builds the walls around and the roof above. Both are required to survive the elements and protect those who live there with us.

As I sit on the plane catching up on emails and reflecting on my wonderful weekend, my brain snagged on something Adam Grant wrote in his newsletter, and it captures the idea of not just knowing but rather DOING: “The hallmark of expertise is no longer how much you know. It’s how well you synthesize. Information scarcity rewarded knowledge acquisition. Information abundance requires pattern recognition. It’s not enough to connect facts. The future belongs to those who connect dots.”

PACT helps couples connect the dots; to move from ideas to action so they can create long-lasting and meaningful changes in their relationships and therefore their lives. It’s a way to move towards truly being free while holding and being held. If you've ever been curious about what is possible for your relationship, contact me for more information or check out 's therapist directory to find a PACT therapist near you. 💗
