Currently, Kidder County currently has cases of pertussis, aka whooping cough.

Initial symptoms are fever, runny nose, cough, etc that mimic many other viral illnesses.

However, the cough progresses into a hacking and "whooping" sound. This cough is especially dangerous for young children and infants. It can lead to difficulty breathing, vomiting after cough since it is so severe.

Pertussis spreads easily through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing. You can be contagious weeks after symptoms start. If started on antibiotics, you remain contagious (and should stay home) for 5 days after treatment starts.

If you are not vaccinated and have any of these symptoms, please stay home and isolate. There is antibiotic treatment available and is most effective if started early in symptoms.

Please call our office with any questions.
