Casting a circle:
Casting a circle is a ritual many witches do before performing any type of magick or energy work. Used mainly for protection.
A powerful way of doing this is by 'calling in the quarters', this term is used when someone describes the process of calling on the help of each basic element- Earth, Fire, Water and Air. There can be many reasons someone may call on the elements besides for protect, it can be used to enhance your magick and even as simple as a way to feel more connected to nature.
Each element is associated with a specific direction, certain colors and a list of energetic qualities.
These are the directions you will face as you call the corresponding element.
Earth- North
Air- East
Fire- South
Water- West
Earth is known for abundance, discipline, prosperity, grounding energy, stability, balance, fertility, growth, calmness, patience, endurance and performance.
Air is known for rapid movement, mental clarity, thought, open-mindedness, creativity, communication, imagination, intellect and learning.
Fire is known for passion, power, motion, transformation, sun energy, willpower, motivation, enthusiasm, courage, s*x and initiative.
Water is known for emotions, fluidity, empathy, relationships, divination, sensitivity, intuition and love.
Although these are the basic attributes to the elements, you can make a list of qualities you personally connect with for each element.
Each element needs to be represented in some way.
Tarot cards:
Pentacles- earth
Swords- air
Wands- fire
Cups- water
Candles:
Earth- brown, green, gold
Air- light blue, white, yellow
Fire- red, orange, gold
Warter- blue, silver, light green
Crystals:
Highly versatile magickal tool. Most commonly representing earth. However they can do so much more!
Tea:
Hot cup of tea can represent all four elements.
Tea for earth
Liquid for water
Heat for fire
Steam for air
Incense:
Representing air and earth
Music:
Brainstorm a list of songs representing each of the elements.
Casting your circle:
A great way is to place each item in the cooresponding location, I like to place them a little ways out so it forms the border of your circle.
Start by facing north (earth), using a wand, athame, or even just your finger- pointing at the first item walking slowly to the right start by calling upon the first element in the north than stopping at the next one to the east (making sure to go through each item like connect the dots) calling on each element until you face north again, creating a full circle.
"I call upon the element of earth. Bring your stability and resilience to my magick today."
"I call upon the element of air. Bring me mental clarity as I perform my magick today."
"I call upon the element of fire. Bring me your power and strength to my magick today."
"I call upon the element of water. Bring me your connection and compassion to my magick today."
You are now ready to perform whatecer magick or ritual you have planned!
Closing your circle:
To close your circle- say for each element:
"Thank you earth, you are now free to go, but are welcome to stay."
Repeat for each of the other elements.
