Think you need 10,000 steps a day? Think again. 👟

A new study says 7,000 steps may be enough to boost your heart and brain health. Dr. Dennis Kerrigan, our senior clinical exercise physiologist, sat down with WDIV Local 4 / ClickOnDetroit’s Nick Monacelli to talk about new research showing how this simpler goal can still deliver major health benefits.

Tune in to hear Dr. Kerrigan’s full take on the new daily step goal: https://bit.ly/3JP0Hfs

When Logan Decker’s elbow dislocated during the first football game of his senior year, he thought his high school athletic career was over – not to mention college. But his fears were unfounded, thanks to our sports medicine physician Dr. Stephen Spadafore.

Logan worked relentlessly with Dr. Spadafore and the rest of his care team: he underwent 2 months of occupational therapy, 3 times a week. On practice days, Logan could be found on the sidelines doing his “therapy homework,” focusing on strengthening, healing and staying connected to his teammates.

It paid off and Logan returned to the field in just 3 weeks. “It was nerve-racking at first, but my confidence and strength came back quickly,” he says. “I felt like Dr. Spadafore always kept an eye out for me and wanted me to get back on the field as much as I wanted to.”

Logan went on to play the rest of the season with a stability brace, helping lead his high school to their third consecutive Division 6 MHSAA State Championship. In the final game at Ford Field, Logan capped his high school career with a highlight-reel play, making a great catch and scoring a touchdown. Now, he is a collegiate athlete.

“Thanks to my strong support network and the Henry Ford Sports Medicine team, I am a tight end at Mount St. Joseph University, doing what I love,” Logan says.

When Oregon resident Brian Johnson was diagnosed with advanced appendix cancer, he traveled across the country to receive an innovative treatment from Dr. Richard Berri, our chief of surgical oncology at Henry Ford St. John Hospital.

Dr. Berri created the first PIPAC (pressurized intraperitoneal aerosolized chemotherapy) program in the state of Michigan – and it can be life-changing for those with advanced abdominal cancers who otherwise have limited options.

PIPAC is a minimally invasive procedure that uses high pressure to deliver chemotherapy directly into the abdominal cavity. It destroys tumors that are too microscopic to surgically remove.

“A lot of stage 4 patients aren’t offered any treatment and told from day 1 they have maybe a 6-month survival regardless of what they do,” says Dr. Berri. “(PIPAC) offers these patients hope in the form of a treatment that can be tolerated.”

Henry Ford Innovations hosted a celebratory ceremony honoring 23 outstanding high school students from 16 schools across Michigan who completed our 2025 Department of Surgery High School Internship Program!

Led by Dr. Ikenna Okereke, vice chair of our Department of Surgery, and coordinated by Wilma J. Ruffin M.Ed, BS BA, the program has impacted more than 1,400 students since its inception. This year was our most successful yet, with 402 students participating in the school program and 23 advancing to the internship.

Over the course of 10 weeks, students engaged in lectures, surgical simulations and hands-on experience and confidence in pursing medical careers. Many past students are now thriving in college and medical school, and we are excited to one day welcome back future alumni as the next generation of medical leaders! 💡
