February is Women’s Heart Health Month ❤️

Heart disease is the #1 cause of death for women, yet many symptoms are missed or ignored. Women may experience fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, jaw or back pain—not just chest pain.

Protect your heart:

Know your numbers: blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar

Move your body regularly

Eat heart-healthy foods

Manage stress and prioritize sleep

Don’t ignore unusual symptoms—advocate for your health

Your heart works for you every day. This February, return the favor.

Women & Heart Disease During Menopause

During menopause, hormonal changes—especially declining estrogen—can significantly increase a woman’s risk of heart disease. Cholesterol levels may rise, blood vessels become less flexible, and blood pressure can increase, often without obvious symptoms. What feels like fatigue, anxiety, or weight gain may mask underlying heart concerns. Awareness, regular heart checkups, and early prevention are critical. Menopause is not just a life transition—it’s a key moment to protect your heart. ❤️

Angioplasty saves lives by restoring blood flow to the heart when arteries become dangerously narrowed or blocked.
Using a small balloon and often a stent, cardiologists can quickly open an artery—relieving chest pain, stabilizing heart rhythm, and limiting heart muscle damage during a heart attack.

When performed early, angioplasty can mean the difference between permanent heart damage and recovery.
Recognizing symptoms and seeking care immediately saves lives.

❤️ Your heart matters. Don’t ignore warning signs.

Ever wonder how doctors open a blocked heart artery without major surgery? Here's how angioplasty is done. First, the patient is given local anesthesia and mild medicine to relax. A doctor makes a tiny entry, usually in the wrist or groin, and guides a thin, flexible tube called a catheter through the blood vessels to the heart using live X-ray. Once the blockage is found, a small balloon at the tip of the catheter is carefully positioned and gently inflated. This pushes the fatty plaque against the artery wall, widening the pathway so blood can flow freely again. In most cases, a tiny metal mesh tube called a stent is placed at the same time. The stent expands with the balloon and stays behind to keep the artery open. The balloon is deflated and removed, blood flow is checked and the catheter is taken out.

The entire procedure often takes under an hour, helps relieve chest pain and can prevent heart damage, letting patients recover much faster than open surgery.

Pulmonary Embolism (PE): What Patients Need to Know

A pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a blood clot—most often formed in the deep veins of the legs (deep vein thrombosis / DVT)—breaks loose and travels to the lungs.

When the clot reaches the lungs, it can block blood flow and oxygen, placing sudden strain on the heart and lungs. This can quickly become life-threatening if not treated immediately.

How Pulmonary Embolism Happens:

• A blood clot forms, usually in the leg
• The clot travels through the bloodstream
• It lodges in a lung artery
• Oxygen levels drop and heart strain increases

Common Symptoms of PE:

• Sudden shortness of breath
• Chest pain (often worse with deep breathing)
• Rapid heart rate
• Lightheadedness or fainting
• Cough, sometimes with blood

Why Early Action Matters:

Pulmonary embolism can develop silently and worsen rapidly. Recognizing symptoms and seeking emergency medical care can be lifesaving.

If you or someone near you experiences these symptoms, call 911 immediately.

Blood normally flows freely through the coronary arteries, delivering oxygen to the heart with every beat.

Over years, cholesterol slowly builds along the vessel wall, forming plaque. As plaque grows, the artery narrows and becomes fragile. Without warning, the plaque can rupture, spilling its contents into the bloodstream.

Platelets rush in, forming a blood clot that can suddenly block the artery—cutting off oxygen to the heart muscle.
Deprived of oxygen, heart cells begin to fail. Heart rhythm becomes unstable, pumping weakens, and blood pressure drops.

This sudden cascade marks a heart attack—a silent process that rapidly becomes a life-threatening emergency.

Knowing the risks and acting early saves lives.

What really happens during a heart attack

Blood normally flows freely through the coronary arteries, delivering oxygen to the heart with every beat. Over time, cholesterol can build up along the artery wall, forming plaque that narrows and weakens the vessel. When this plaque suddenly ruptures, platelets rush in and form a blood clot that can abruptly block blood flow.

Without oxygen, heart muscle cells begin to fail. Electrical signals become unstable, the heart’s pumping weakens, blood pressure drops, and circulation can collapse. What started silently inside an artery quickly becomes a life-threatening emergency, often felt as sudden, crushing chest pain.

Recognizing risk factors, knowing warning signs, and acting early saves lives.

Atherosclerosis is the thickening and hardening of the arteries caused by plaque buildup inside the vessel walls.

As arteries lose flexibility and narrow, blood flow becomes restricted—raising the risk of:
• Heart attack
• Stroke
• Peripheral artery disease

Atherosclerosis often progresses silently. Heart-healthy habits and regular cardiovascular screenings are key to prevention and early detection.
