I’m excited to be joining an incredible lineup of speakers for the 2nd Annual SoMeDocs Menopause Conference this year.

This event brings together physicians and health experts who are deeply engaged in advancing conversations around menopause care, with thoughtful, evidence-based discussions designed to support clinicians in caring for patients through this important life stage.

One of the things I appreciate most about this conference is how accessible it is. The entire event is online, making it easy to attend from anywhere, and the registration cost is intentionally kept reasonable so more clinicians can participate.

The program is beautifully organized and professionally produced, with a strong focus on practical insights and meaningful dialogue. Attendees can also choose to complete optional CME reflection credits connected to the sessions.

If menopause care is part of your clinical work, or if you want to deepen your understanding of this rapidly evolving space in medicine, I think this will be a valuable experience.

Hope to see you there!

National Women Physicians Day: From Elizabeth Blackwell to Now

National Women Physicians Day honors Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, who in 1849 became the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. Her courage paved the way for generations of women in medicine.

Today, women make up approximately 38% of practicing physicians in the U.S. However, significant disparities remain in certain specialties. Women represent only ~15% of cardiologists and fewer than 5% of interventional cardiologists nationwide.

As we recognize National Women Physicians Day, we celebrate the achievements of women physicians across all specialties while acknowledging the continued need for mentorship, equity, and opportunity—particularly in procedural and leadership roles. From Elizabeth Blackwell to today, the progress is meaningful, and the work continues.

Women & Heart Disease During Menopause

During menopause, hormonal changes—especially declining estrogen—can significantly increase a woman’s risk of heart disease. Cholesterol levels may rise, blood vessels become less flexible, and blood pressure can increase, often without obvious symptoms. What feels like fatigue, anxiety, or weight gain may mask underlying heart concerns. Awareness, regular heart checkups, and early prevention are critical. Menopause is not just a life transition—it’s a key moment to protect your heart. ❤️

Angioplasty saves lives by restoring blood flow to the heart when arteries become dangerously narrowed or blocked.
Using a small balloon and often a stent, cardiologists can quickly open an artery—relieving chest pain, stabilizing heart rhythm, and limiting heart muscle damage during a heart attack.

When performed early, angioplasty can mean the difference between permanent heart damage and recovery.
Recognizing symptoms and seeking care immediately saves lives.

❤️ Your heart matters. Don’t ignore warning signs.

Ever wonder how doctors open a blocked heart artery without major surgery? Here's how angioplasty is done. First, the patient is given local anesthesia and mild medicine to relax. A doctor makes a tiny entry, usually in the wrist or groin, and guides a thin, flexible tube called a catheter through the blood vessels to the heart using live X-ray. Once the blockage is found, a small balloon at the tip of the catheter is carefully positioned and gently inflated. This pushes the fatty plaque against the artery wall, widening the pathway so blood can flow freely again. In most cases, a tiny metal mesh tube called a stent is placed at the same time. The stent expands with the balloon and stays behind to keep the artery open. The balloon is deflated and removed, blood flow is checked and the catheter is taken out.

The entire procedure often takes under an hour, helps relieve chest pain and can prevent heart damage, letting patients recover much faster than open surgery.
