Navigating Grief During the Holidays

The holiday season can be filled with warmth, celebration, and togetherness — but for those who are grieving, it can also be a tender and difficult time. Traditions may feel different, memories may feel heavier, and the absence of someone dearly missed can be felt even more deeply.

At this time of year, please remember:

💔 It’s okay to feel however you feel. Grief isn’t linear, and there is no “right” way to move through the season.
❤️‍🩹 You are allowed to honor your loved one in your own way. Light a candle, share a story, cook their favorite dish — or choose quiet reflection.
❤️ You are not alone. Whether your heart is heavy or hopeful, we’re here to walk alongside you.

If we're being honest, the "most wonderful time of the year" doesn't always feel so wonderful.

Maybe you're experiencing the pain of the first Christmas without a loved one.

Maybe it's been many years and the grief is still there.

Maybe you find yourself alone, not getting to celebrate the season with those you care about.

Maybe you're feeling the stress and overwhelm of the season and have lost sight of why we're doing all of this.

Maybe you're tired of being the one to manufacture the "Christmas magic."

Maybe you want to scream when you hear all the holly jolly Christmas songs because that's just not where you're at this year.

Maybe this has been a hard year and you just don't feel joyful.

Whatever is making this season hard for you, there's hope in Christ.

Join us for a community Blue Christmas Service on Sunday, December 21 at 4:00 pm here at Open Door Community Church.

Blue Christmas is designed to meet us in all the realities of the holiday season: the pain of loss and hope we have in Christ. There will be prayers, music, readings, Scripture, and silence. You are welcome here. In your sorrow. Your grief. Your lack of joy. Your seeking of hope. You are welcome here.
