Why are so many people still not accessing hospice care when they qualify for it?
Too often we see:
• People spending their final months going in and out of the hospital with no real improvement.
• Elderly spouses and adult children caregiving alone at home, overwhelmed and exhausted.
• Families paying for private caregivers who cannot provide the clinical care needed to keep their loved one comfortable at home, at times resulting in more hospitalizations.
It’s heartbreaking because hospice could be an extra layer of support in many of these situations.
Hospice focuses on comfort, dignity, and quality of life. It provides nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, medications, medical equipment, and 24/7 support wherever “home” is.
Hospice is covered 100% by Medicare and most insurance plans.
Healthcare providers are often the ones that make hospice referrals, but families and patients can also ask. Starting the conversation can make all the difference.
