Impact of Everyday Hip Pain
~~~
The impact of hip pain is something that will affect you everyday. The hip is a weight bearing joint, which is why most people find difficulty in creating lasting relief for their symptoms when they are experiencing hip pain.
The common reaction is to cover up the problem with some painkillers or stopping whatever activity bothers you as much as possible- but that is only putting a band-aid on the problem, not getting to the root of it!
Things that can lead to hip injuries and pain include:
➡Age
➡Activity level and type
➡Trauma
➡Weakness
➡Poor movement patterns
If you don’t address this problem, the pain will get worse and will further limit your activity. This reduces your ability to remain physically active and to complete activities that you enjoy.
As increased research has come out, the term impingement isn’t able to accurately delineate what’s happening in the shoulder in these cases. Tendinopathy or partial thickness tearing in at least one of the rotator cuff muscles is now what defines this injury.
Physical therapy is shown to be an effective conservative treatment with subacromial pain syndrome, partial thickness rotator cuff tears, and even non-traumatic full thickness rotator cuff tears.
The Movement Continuum: Physical Therapy → fitness → nutrition → lifestyle
~~~~
Often when patients come to PT at some point in their recovery journey our clinicians work with them to help them gain back general strength in the location of that injury. After a full recovery, strength training is something that should continue because it is not a quick fix.

Here in Northern Virginia we do not get to experience snow storms very often however, when we do it is often all of it at once. With the snow we all get involved with multiple different activities whether it is sled riding, throwing snowballs around or doing one of our favorite things (not) which is shoveling the snow and unburying our cars. During some of these activities we can put a lot of stress through our shoulders and the musculature that helps support it.

Inside of the shoulder there are a key group of muscles known as your rotator cuff. These muscles are responsible for the stability of the shoulder through multiple motions. While these muscles have a lot of control of what your shoulder does they can also be injured very easily especially if the shoulder is placed in a compromised position.

When shoveling the snow there is also a lot of stress that goes through not only our shoulders but also our lower backs. The constant lifting action that we make when shoveling and moving snow can end up being detrimental to the small muscles of our shoulders. If trying to lift the shovel and your shoulder is in a compromised position it can cause damage and injury which can be due to weakness or chronic issues in the shoulder which can lead to long term impacts.

If you have been dealing with shoulder pain that has been aggravated by these activities or you have had a sudden new onset of shoulder pain you should give us a call so we can help you get to the root of your issue!
