It is not fair to evaluate parents based on whether their children ever felt emotionally wounded by life. The valid question is whether the parents were so neglectful or hurtful in their response, that the emotional wounds became INFECTED.

It remains my privilege to work with children and families facing divorce and custody litigation. When any family redefines itself, it is useful to find that “other special grown-up” who is gentle with the children, but clear and firm with the adults. This remains my highest aspiration.

If you (even as an adult) struggle with low self esteem- ask yourself another question today, instead of your self-punitive thoughts:

Have I been purposeful today?
Have I been gentle or kind to someone today?
Have I noticed that someone values me today?

I feel it is both helpful and grounding to remind parents - that if a) their children are progressing and b) their children are nourished by parental love and attention...then they are on the right track.
