Psychoeducation Tuesday: The Difference Between Coping and Healing!

We use coping as a way to manage distress in our lives. Healing, rather than just helping you get through the moment, moves toward the root of the wound. Integrating it and creating lasting change.

Healthy Coping Skills:
Coping can be incredibly supportive and grounding. Examples include:
- going for a walk
- journaling
- reaching out to a trusted friend for comfort

These help you stay steady when life feels overwhelming.

Unhealthy Coping to Be Aware Of :
Some coping strategies pull us away from what we’re feeling rather than support us through it. These might look like:

- avoidance or distraction (constantly being on your phone or staying overly busy)
- overeating or substance use
- people‑pleasing or emotional avoidance in relationships

These are indications that something inside needs care.

What Healing Looks Like:
-Healing focuses more on your interior world than on external actions. It often looks like:
- working through grief instead of pushing it aside
- reframing core beliefs that keep you stuck in fear
- allowing yourself to feel emotions you’ve been avoiding

Healing is slow, layered, and often supported by safe relationships or therapy.

Coping and healing are not opposites they’re partners. Each plays a different role in your well‑being.

“Coping helps us stay safe enough to do the work of healing. Healing helps us reduce the need for coping over time.” -Agree Psychology

Because coping can sometimes feel like healing, it can be helpful to pause and reflect:
Do you feel like you’re moving forward, or do you feel stuck in the same place?
This might be a sign that you’re coping with the wound rather than healing through it.
I encourage you to ask yourself:
“Am I coping right now, or am I moving toward healing?

Psychoeducation Tuesdays:

Anxiety is a prevalent issue in our modern culture. According to United Healthcare, up to 31% of Americans have struggled with it at least once in their lives.

Even when anxiety feels overwhelming, it’s important to remember that the path toward peace and freedom is never closed to us.

Here are five simple, evidence‑informed changes that can help reduce anxiety and support overall well‑being

1. Prioritize sleep
when we lack sleep our mental health can get worse. Adults at least need 7-9 hours a night to function well.

2. Keep active
Movement helps the body release serotonin and endorphins, chemicals that support mood stability and resilience. Regular physical activity can make it easier to cope with daily stressors.

3. Focus on good nutrition
Nourishing your body with balanced, whole foods supports your brain, nervous system, and overall well‑being. What we eat truly affects how we feel.

4. Limit Alcohol
If you notice increased anxiety the morning after drinking, you’re not imagining it. As the body detoxifies, it can become more jittery and sensitive, which may heighten anxious feelings.

5. Meditation or Prayer
Quiet moments of reflection, prayer, or mindful breathing help calm the nervous system and interrupt cycles of negative thinking. Even a few minutes a day can make a meaningful difference.

Hi, I'm Kasia! I'm a recent graduate of Franciscan University, originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I am a dance teacher as well as Dance & Movement Specialist for Fiat Counseling. 🏝️Three Necessities on a Stranded Island: my journal (pen included), Flannery O’Connor’s collected short stories, and a guitar

🥣Fun fact: My name is pronounced like Kashi (the cereal), but ending with an “ah” :)

We are so excited to begin working with Kasia! 🥳❤️
