Research suggests healthy lifestyle behaviors and habits promote mental health and wellness and can be used to both prevent and treat mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, bipolar spectrum disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, and psychotic disorders. These lifestyle behaviors are grouped into six general categories.

A survey* conducted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) found that 64 percent of individuals living with a mental illness reported that their conditions worsened around the holidays. Whether due to separation from loved ones, personal grief, the pressures of gift-giving, economic hardship, challenging interactions with family members, or shorter days, this time of year can bring unique behavioral health challenges. Here are some tips to survive the holiday season!

December is Seasonal Affective Disorder Awareness Month.

Typically SAD occurs during late fall and winter months, when there is less sunlight and colder weather. The symptoms usually lift during the spring and summer months.

SAD is a type of depression, so the symptoms look similar to depression symptoms, and can include:

Sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings
Feelings of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
Loss of interest or pleasure in formerly enjoyable activities
Fatigue and decreased energy
Overeating (or conversely, lack of appetite)
Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, or making decisions
Social withdrawal
Thoughts of death or su***de

National Grief Awareness Week is observed the first week of December and is a time to raise awareness about grief and loss. According to SAMHSA, "This observance aims to decrease the stigma surrounding grief by acknowledging that it is a natural response to loss, while also highlighting that some people have more difficulties processing grief and may need additional support."
