Portage County WIC and Nutrition Services Offering telephone appointments during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The WIC nutrition program provides free nutritious food packages, online and in-person nutrition information, breastfeeding support, and other services to pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infants and children under 5 who are income eligible.

Options have changed to meet new guidelines for added sugars. Vitamin D content was also a factor in our chosen yogurts. You’ll notice many of the flavored options have gone away (due to the sugar content). The joy of plain yogurt is that you can use it as a sweet OR a savory snack. Add fruit to plain yogurt and top with honey, maple syrup, or granola for a sweet snack. Add plain yogurt in place of sour cream on top of your baked potato, soup, or salsa for a savory snack.

Almond and cashew butter are new options in this WIC food category. Selected brands have protein and iron in amounts comparable to peanut butter. These expanded options keep our peanut free WIC families from missing out on these important meat alternatives.

WIC welcomes new whole grain products including whole wheat bagels, English muffins and pita bread, wild rice, quinoa and corn masa flour! These comply with WICs standards for 50% or more whole grain ingredients which ensures they provide fiber and support healthy digestion.

Whatever your reason for choosing plant-based milk, rest assured that WIC has selected options with adequate Protein, Calcium, Vitamin D, and limited added sugars. These nutrients are so important for the populations WIC serves. Calcium and Vitamin D deficiencies are in the top 5 most common reported deficiencies in the United States.
